JOSÉ TORRES OVANDO (MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, 1892 – MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, 1936)
He studied with José G. Aragón and José E. Pierson before perfecting his vocal technique in Italy. A versatile performer, he was a member of the Popular Opera Company and received critical acclaim for his appearances at the National Theatre, where he performed alongside noted artists such as Luisa Larraza, Beatriz Franco, Soledad Goyzueta, and Luisa Tetrazzini.
In 1899, he participated in the Mexican premiere of Puccini’s Le villi, singing the role of “Guillaume” at the Renacimiento Theatre. He also took part in the premieres of El rey poeta (1901) and Nicolás Bravo (1910). His extensive repertoire encompassed not only opera but also operetta and zarzuela, showcasing his adaptability and wide-ranging talent.
