Anna-Maria Guglielmetti (Soprano) (? 1895 – Turin 1982)


Probably she made her debut in 1915. Already in 1920 she sang in Ravenna the role of Leila in ‘’Pêcheurs de perles’’ of Bizet. She appeared in Italy among other things in Naples and Turin, in Verona and in Bari and gave guest performances in Barcelona, Cairo, Budapest, Ostend and in Switzerland. In 1925 she travelled around them Central Europe, above all Germany, with the opera troupe of Max Sauter. In 1926 she undertook an England tour with an opera society. In 1927 she made guest appearance (unsuccessfull) at the Covent Garden as Marguerite de Valois in Meyerbeer’s ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’. After the sudden loss of her voice she studied again under Giuseppina Finzi-Magrini in Turin. Then she married the Swiss impresario Henri Giovanna and sat down in Geneva. In Geneva she again sang after 1930, above all as Mimi in ‘’La Bohème’’, but also in other parts from the lyrical repertoire. She also continued her appearances, among other things at the Grand Opéra, Paris (1931 as Gilda) and at the Paris Opéra-Comique (1931 as Mimi), in Berlin (1929 at the Concert Hall) and in 1931 like in 1938 in Budapest. From 1946 to 1975 she worked as a pedagogue at the Geneva Conservatory.

Guglielmetti sang several times even in the period of her harder time with singing. Hungarian conductor Vilmos Komor conducted her in Budapest and by his memories, later once Guglielmetti told him, she had had a strong illness in her ears, so had sang nearly deaf which had caused the horrible situation and lasted so long.
When she recovered, could go on her carrier successfully again.
This was at the time of her Budapest guest appearance as Violetta in La Traviata, 1/12/1934.
This is in the book of great Hungarian conductor about Guglielmetti, mentioning her as a brilliant star of opera from that period.

Francesco Navarini (Bass) (Cittadella presso Padova 1855 - Milano 1923)

He studied singing under Carlo Boroni and Giuseppe Felix in Milan and made his debut in 1876 at the Teatro Comunale of Ferrara as Alfonso in ‘’Lucrezia Borgia’’ of Donizetti. He made guest appearances in Malta, Venice, Trieste, Florence and Turin and sang in the 1881-83 seasons at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon. In 1883 he made his debut at La Scala; sang with success also at the Teatro Costanzi of Rome. He sang at La Scala in the premieres of the operas ‘’Condor’’ of Carlos Gomes (21. 2. 1891) and ‘’Fior d'Alpe’’ of Alberto Franchetti (15. 3. 1894). In 1894 he sang at La Scala in the premiere of the revised version of Verdi’s ‘’Don  Carlos’’. He took part at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa in the premiere of Alberto Franchetti's opera ‘’Cristoforo Colombo’’ (6. 10. 1892). He made guest appearances in London (1887), Monte Carlo (1900), Prague (1901), St. Petersburg, Madrid, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Odessa and Seville. Especially in Russia Navarrini achieved shining success. In the 1898-99 season he performed at La Scala in Wagner’s ‘’Meistersinger’’ under Toscanini. In 1902 tour through the USA with an opera troupe under the direction of Pietro Mascagni and he excited sensation especially as an Il Cieco in ‘’Iris’’. He retired from the stage in 1912. He spent his old age in Rossano Veneto.

Mariano Stabile (Baritone) (Palermo 1888 – Milan 1968)



Stabile's vocal studies took place at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Antonio Cotogni, and he made his professional debut in Palermo, as Marcello in La bohème, in 1909. After singing throughout Italy, he appeared in Saint Petersburg in 1911, Buenos Aires in 1913, Barcelona in 1914, and made his debut at the Paris Opera in 1917, as Amonasro in Aida. The turning point of his career came when Arturo Toscanini chose him for the title-role in Falstaff for the reopening of La Scala in 1921, a role that he would eventually sing an estimated 1200 times during his long career. He sang at La Scala until 1955, and among his other roles there were: Gérard, Scarpia, Iago, Malatesta, Dulcamara, Beckmesser, Schicchi. Also at La Scala, he created the title role of Respighi's Belfagor, in 1923. He also took part in the revival of Il turco in Italia, as Prosdocimo, in 1955, opposite Maria Callas. Stabile appeared regularly at the Royal Opera House in London, from 1926 to 1931. He also sang at the Festivals of Glyndebourne and Salzburg between 1931 and 1939, and in Mozart roles such as Figaro, Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso, at the Cambridge Theatre in London from 1946 to 1949. His only appearance in North America seems to have been in Chicago in 1924. Stabile had a good voice, if not particularly beautiful, and it was used with style and intelligence. He had excellent diction and was an outstanding singing-actor, especially in comedy, and he enjoyed a remarkably long career. He was married to Italian soprano Gemma Bosini (1890–1982), with whom he occasionally appeared on stage.

Nadia Svilarova (Soprano) (Sofia 1900 - ?)


She studied singing in Sofia under Efemia Ilkovo and Ivan Vulpe. She made her debut in operetta. It has happened in 1917. After her debut as Aida she had an important career in the years after 1920 singing the roles of the dramatic soprano in Italy. In 1924, she appeared in Verona singing Marguerite in the ‘’Damnation di Faust’’ by Berlioz, in 1928 the role of Leonore in ‘’Trovatore’’ with Jose Palet in Genoa. Appearing at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo, she sang Marina in ‘’Boris Godunov’’ in 1928, repeating that role at La Scala in 1929 with great success. In Venice she sang as a partner of Beniamino Gigli. Her career did not last long as she seemed to have retired from the stage in the 1930s. Major roles in her career included Aida, Tosca and Marina. She was the sister-in-law of the famous Italian singer, Salvatore Baccaloni (1900-1969). Probably she died young.

Vittorio Fullin (Tenor) (Pola 1895 - ?)

He studied singing under Mandolini and made his debut at Politeama of Livorno as Pollione in ‘’Norma’’. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in ‘’Aida’’. It has happened in 1925. He sang the role of Radames at the Metropolitan Opera also in 1927. He retired from the stage approximately in 1940.

The new tenor, tall and thickset of build, ample of voice, and routined in action, did not altogether conceal his nervousness, which may have had something to do with traces of tightness and with his changing to a meaningless long "A" vowel, the final word on which occurs the high B Flat of this taxing air. Yet it was smooth and attractive singing and disclosed a voice of good volume and of musical quality. Later, in the Nile Scene, Mr. Fullin sang very attractive phrases and was generally quite successful with his music, despite a little of hoarseness on his top notes. There was every indication that Generalissimo Gatti-Casazza will be able to make good use of him in meeting the manifold requirements of the operatic repertoire.
