JUAN DE CASENAVE (MADRID, SPAIN, 1888 – BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA, 6 DECEMBER, 1961)
He was born into a French-Spanish family originally from Orthez, in the Pyrenees. He pursued studies in engineering science in Germany while also studying music, singing, and piano. In 1906, he moved to Spain, where he studied singing under the guidance of the renowned baritone Ignacio Tabuyo.
In 1913, he made his operatic debut at the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao as Almaviva in G. Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, opposite Ángeles Ottein as Rosina. The following year, he performed at the same theater as Des Grieux in Manon. He achieved significant success as a lyric tenor at the Teatro Madrid, performing roles such as Des Grieux in Manon and Rodolfo in La Bohème. His talents also graced the stage at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona and, in 1923, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon.
On October 17, 1923, he performed at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid in the premiere of the zarzuela Doña Francisquita by Amadeo Vives. That same year, he also garnered great success in the zarzuela Marina by Emilio Arrieta at the same theater. Throughout the 1920s, he became one of Spain’s most celebrated zarzuela singers.
Later, he traveled to Argentina, where he continued his stage career. He performed in Buenos Aires at venues such as Teatro Victoria, Teatro El Mayo, La Comedia, Teatro El Nacional, and Teatro Colón (in a concert), as well as in other cities like Rosario, Córdoba, La Rioja, and even Mexico City.
His operatic repertoire included major roles such as Faust in Gounod’s Faust, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Alfredo in La Traviata, and Cavaradossi in Tosca.
