Julienne Marchal (Soprano) (Schaerbeek, Belgium 1882 – ?)

She made her debut in 1906 at the Le Théâtre Royal à La Haye as Lakmé. The same part she sang in 1906 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. During the following years she appeared in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille Pau and Antwerp. In the 1912-1915 seasons she had a huge success at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. In 1916 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome she sang the part of Gilda in ‘’Rigoletto’’ and as a partner of Mattia Battistini appeared in ‘’Traviata’’. In 1917 at La Scala she took over the part of Philine in ‘’Mignon’’ by A. Thomas. After her marriage with the pilot Le Blanc she retired from the stage, but began again after her husband’s early death in 1922. Now she appeared in Nice, Cannes and Monte Carlo. In the 1930’s she sang small character roles at the French provincial theaters.

In 1892 she studied singing under Rosine Laborde in Paris. She made her debut in 1893 at the Opéra Royal de Versailles  in ‘’Lakme’’. Since 1906 she taught singing in Paris. Still in 1937 she lived in Bordeaux.

Bernardo Bernardi (Laib Berek) (Tenor) (Warsaw, Poland August 3, 1882 - Düsseldorf, Germany March 11, 1923)

His real name was Laib Berek. He spent his youth in Italy, then went to Switzerland, where he was active as a carpet dealer. In 1905 became a pupil of Hans Rogorsch in Zurich. In 1906 he made his debut at the Stadttheater in  Zürich and till 1913 remained a member of this opera house. Here he sang a huge number of opera parts and created among other things for Zurich and Switzerland the role of Narraboth in ‘’Salome’’ (1907) and the Bacchus in ‘’Ariadne auf Naxos’’ by R. Strauss. Here he appeared also in the premieres of the operas ‘’Eugene Onegin’’ (1908-1909 season), ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ (1909-1910 season) and ‘’Don Carlo’’ (1911). In  the 1913-1915 seasons he was engaged by the Opernhaus in Dusseldorf. Since 1915 he was to be heard in Zürich, Basel, Bern und Luzern. His best performances were considered to be in the Italian repertoire. Probably he died suddenly. His recordings are extremely rare.

Valentín Šindler (Tenor) (Cholín, Czech Republic January 30, 1885 - Prague, Czech Republic January 21, 1957)

Originally he studied theology in Olomouc, where he also received his musical education. He studied singing in Vienna with Robinson and in Berlin with Emerich. He made his debut in 1909 at the National Theater in Prague as Hoffmann in ‘’Les contes d'Hoffmann’’ by J. Offenbach. He was a favorite tenor of the composer Leoš Janáček. In Brno he was active as vocal pedagogue. From 1952-1956 he worked at the Music Academy in Prague.

Camille Rouquetty (Tenor) (1910 - 1976)


He began his career in 1935 at the Grand Opéra in Paris, where he made his debut as messenger in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ by Saint-Saëns. During the following years he sang a huge number of small parts in this opera house and only in 1938 started to appear as the first tenor. Since 1941 he was to be heard also at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where among other things he took part in the premiere of the opera ‘’Ginevra’’ of M. Delannoy (1942). Till 1961 he appeared at the Grand Opéra.

Alessandro Modesti (Baritone) (Roma 1858 - Novara 1940)

He was a pupil of the Melanese pedagogues G.Cima and made his debut in 1886 in the Teatro Reinach in Parma as Doge in ‘’Due Foscari’’ of Verdi. He already had with his debut and afterwards as Nabucco in Verdi’s ‘’Nabucco’’ a huge success. Appearances followed in Vicenza, Torino and in Buenos Aires. In 1892 at the Teatro Regio in Parmahe sang the role of Alfonso in Donizetti’s ‘’Favorita’’. In 1892 he appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Romein the premiere of A.Gnaga’s opera ‘’Swarten’’ as a partner of  Francesco Tamagno (15. 11. 1892). He achieved his great success at guest performances in leading stages of North and South America. In 1893 with Compagnia Ughetto he was in Mexico City and sang with great success in the première of Verdi’s ‘’Falstaff’’. Now the role of Ford in this opera became one of his star roles, which he sang in the 1894-95 season among other things at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, at the Teatro Sociale of Trento, at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa and also at the Teatro Malibran in Venezia. Since 1900 he was married with the Mezzo-soprano Carolina Zauner (1872-1952). With Carolina Zauner in 1910 at New York he opened a song studio which was  highly respectable. Later the couple returned again to Italy and continued his educational activity inNovara. He never made records.

Augusto Brogi (Tenor) (Sesto Fiorentino 1847 – Florence 1917)

He studied under the famous teachers Romani and Bianchi in Istituto Musicale di Firenze inFlorence. In 1871-1872 he successfully made a debut as baritone in Teatro Pagliano (today Teatro Verdi) in the opera "Contessa di Amalfi" by Errico Petrella. After working in theatres of Florence, where he played various leading roles, he moved to Rome to sing in Apollo theatre, then to Milan where he worked in La Scala, Dal Verme and Manzoni theatres, then to Venice to sing in Teatro La Fenice and finally to Bologna to Teatro Comunale. The lustrous operatic career of Augusto Brogi includes an interesting story with a well known opera "Otello" by Giuseppe Verdi. Called to prepare for the part of Iago, the singer discovered that the tenor role of Otello was closer to his heart. And just like that, after 15 years of being a baritone, Brogi moved on to performing tenor parts which continued for another 15 successful years. The historical chronicles say that the ease with which Augusto Brogi worked, his extremely soft and pleasant timbre, his delivery, classic gestures and interpretation, made it possible for the gifted artist to play a very broad range of roles. Later on as his career became more and more successful, Brogi also worked in most of the major theatres in Paris, Vienna, St.Petersburg, Stockholm, Pest, Copenhagen, Moscow, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. His wide repertoire included 70 operas with famous parts by Verdi, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Bizet among his favourites. He never made records.

Constantino Folco Bottaro (Tenor) (Ramos Mejia 1882 - ?)

He received his education in Italyand there he was a pupil of V. Pintorno in Milan. In 1911 he made his debut at the Teatro Sociale of Mantuaas Turiddu in ''Cavalleria Rusticana’’. In 1912 he made guest appearances in Sicily and Calabria and sang afterwards in TurinGenoaCremona andModena. In 1916 he made his first appearance at La Scala, again as Turiddu. In 1923 he returned to Argentinaand sang at the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires in the premières of Pizzetti’s ‘’Debora e Jaele’’ and ‘’La vida breve’’ of Manuel de Falla as well as in the premiere of ‘’Raquela’’ (1923), an opera of the Argentine composer Felipe Boero. In 1923 he appeared at the opera house of Rio de Janeiroagain in ‘’Debora e Jaele’’ and ‘’La vida breve’’. In 1925 he was to be found again in Italy, where he appeared in the role of the Giannetto in Giordano’s  ‘’La cena delle beffe ‘’. From  1925 to 1927 he sang at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, in 1928 Bottaro made guest appearance at the opera house of Cairo (Herodes in ‘’Salome’’ of R. Strauss), in 1930 he was in Nice, where he performed in ‘’La Cabrera’’ of Gabriel Dupont. In 1935 he appeared for the last time at  the Teatro Verdi in Vicenza as Giannetto in ‘’La cena delle beffe’’. He never made records.

Ugo Colombini (Tenor) (? - ? 1917)

Colombini had a successful career as lyric tenor in different opera houses of Europe. He studied inItaly under the pedagogue Trubadella and made his debut in his native Italy around 1905. In 1909 he went to USA. There he appeared with great success in different italian operas at the Princess Theatre of San Francisco. The next year, as a member of the New York San Carlo Opera Company, he traveled to Monreal and sang at the Princess Theatre, sharing roles with tenor Eugenio Torre. In the same year Colombini went to Habana, where at the Teatro Nacional sang in ‘’Dolorosa’’ by Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes. From Habana he went to Paris and opposite great french bass Juste Nivette sang at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt in Dargomyzhski’s opera ‘’Rusalka’’. In 1913 Colombini was in Venice, where at the Teatro La Fenice he sang the role of Rudello in the premiere of the opera ‘’Melisenda’’ written by Carlo Merli. Unfortunately this talented tenor was killed in front, during the First World War, where he participated as soldier. He never made records.

Colombini came to Americaas part of Oscar Hammerstein I's Manhattan Opera Company and sang in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (the third opening in the new season 1908-1909 [season 3]) on Friday, November 13, 1908. The stars were Luisa Tetrazinni as Rosina, Sammarco as the Barber and Gilibert and De Segurola as Bartolo and Bailio. Unsure what role Colombini sang. However, Oscar Hammerstein dismissed him shortly after this performance for refusing to sing Cassio in Otello. -- Sheean, Vincent Oscar Hammerstein I, Simon and Schuster, Inc. 1956.

Gregorio Gabrielesco (Tenor) (Craiova 1859 - Craiova 1915)


His real name was Grigore Gabrielescu. First he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art in Bucharest, then finished the faculty of law at the University of Bucharest. He made his debut in ‘’Martha’’ of Flotow (1880). With the help of Adelina Patti, he attended the Conservatory in Rome (1885). After finishing he appeared at la Scala in Milan, Teatro Reale ofMadrid, Theatro Son Carlo of Lisbon and in other famous theatres of MontevideoRio de Janeiroand Buenos Aires. In 1889 he appeared at La Scala in Milan in the world premiere of Puccini’s opera ‘’Edgar’’ singing the role of Edgar. In the same year he also performed at La Scala, Milan opposite Antonio Magini-Coletti and Romilda Pantaleoni in Donizetti’s ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’.Was among the first four major tenors of the world authorized by Verdi to sing the title role in Otello. Probably he retired from the stage in 1894. Honorary Member of the Academy of music in Lisbon he was a director of the National Theatre in Craiova (1904) and the school of music of the  Elefterie şi Maria Cornetti (1911-1915). He never made records.

Ettore Borucchia (Bass) (Trevi, near Perugia 1858 - 1944?)

He was a very famous bass. Probably he made his debut in 1883 at the Teatro Politeama Genovese in Genova and appeared in this opera house almost every season till 1905. In the 1888-1890 seasons he made guest appearances at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon. In 1901 (Bologna, Teatro Comunale) and 1903 (Roma, Teatro Costanzi), as a partner of  Enrico Caruso, he sang the role Sparafucile in G. Verdi’s ‘’Rigoletto’’. He never made records.

Nino Bertelli (Tenor) (? Parma - ?)

Between the  two World Wars he had in Italy a significant career. He was one of the best interpreters of the tenor parts in Pietro Mascagni’s operas. Tcomposer himself selected him to appear at the Teatro Alla Scala in his operas ‘’Guglielmo Ratcliff’’ (1932)  and  ‘’Iris’’ (1936). He sang in this opera house also in 1932 the role of Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and in 1935 the Rinuccio in ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’ of Giacomo Puccini. In Italyhe appeared with success in different provincial stages. In 1932 he appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, in 1933 at the Opera House of Rome in the premiere of ‘’La farsa amorosa’’ of Riccardo Zandonai, in 1940 at the Teatro Alla Scala in ‘’Ghirlino’’ of Luigi Ferrari-Trecate. At the Opera House of Rome he performed in 1935 in ‘’La Bohème’’. In 1938 during the festival in the Terme di Caracallahe appeared as Folco in Pietro Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’, at the Opera House of Piacenza in 1936 he sang in Umberto Giordano’s ‘’Andrea Chenier’’, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naplesin ‘’'Pinotta’’ of Mascagni. After his retirement he lived as a singing teacher in Milan. He never made records.

Rudolfs Berzins (Tenor) (Riga, Latvia 1881 - Riga, Latvia 1949)

He was one of the best latvian tenors of his time. He started his career as an actor, then studied singing under Hermann Jadlowker. He made his debut 1903 at the Latvian National Opera as Faust and appeared here till 1905. He participated in the Revolution of 1905–07. He made guest appearances in Münster, Halle and in other german cities. After 1940 he taught at the Latvian Conservatory (Riga) and he became manager and artistic director of the Latvian Theater of Opera and Ballet in 1944. His repertoire included Lohengrin, Samson in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Tannhäuser, Tristan in ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’, Don Jose in ‘’Carmen’’, Otello, Radames in ‘’Aida’’.

Heinrich Winckelshoff (Tenor) (1883, Köln, Germany - ?)

He received his education in Cologne and made his debut in 1907 at the Opernhaus in Cologne, where he remained active till 1918. First he made guest appearances as an opera singer then turned completely to the operetta and worked in the 1920-1926 seasons at the Reichshallen-Operettentheater in Cologne. During his career as an opera singer he sang the part of Don Ottavio in ‘’Don Giovanni’’, Lohengrin, Parsifal, Froh in "Rheingold", Königssohn in "Königskindern", Fenton in ‘’Falstaff’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ and Pinkerton in ‘’Madame Butterfly’’. In the 1910-1913 seasons he sang with success Wagner repertoire at the the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. He made a few records for Parlophon.
