FRENCH SOPRANO ROSE CARON (1857-1930) CDR

ROSE CARON (MONNERVILLE, 17 NOVEMBER, 1857 – PARIS, 9 APRIL, 1930)

She began her education in 1882 at the Paris Conservatoire, studying under Tharset and Marie Sasse. Married young to pianist M. Caron, she performed throughout her career under his name despite their later separation.

Her debut concert took place in Paris in 1880, followed by her stage debut in 1883 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where she portrayed Alice in Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable. On January 7, 1884, she created the role of Brunehild in Ernest Reyer’s Sigurd at the same theater, marking the beginning of a notable collaboration with the composer. In Brussels, her repertoire included Valentina in Les Huguenots, Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, Rachel in Halévy’s La Juive, Norma, and Eva in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (performed in French).

In 1885, she joined the Grand Opéra in Paris, where she became a celebrated Wagnerian soprano. Among her many triumphs, she created Elsa in Lohengrin (1891), Sieglinde in Die Walküre (1892), and Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello (1894). She premiered the title roles in Charles Lefebvre’s Djelma (1894) and Edmond Duvernoy’s Helle (1896). She remained a member of the Grand Opéra ensemble until 1897 and continued to perform there occasionally until 1909.

Her connection with the Théâtre de la Monnaie remained strong, where she premiered Godard’s Jocelyn (1888) as Lawrence and Reyer’s Salammbô (1890). At the Opéra-Comique in Paris, she excelled in Gluck’s operas, performing as Orpheus in Orphée et Eurydice (1892), the title role in Iphigénie en Tauride (1900), and Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio (1898).

She also made acclaimed guest appearances at the Monte Carlo Opera from 1898 to 1902, singing in productions such as Amy Robsart, La damnation de Faust, and Lohengrin.

Madame Caron retired from the stage in 1909 and became a professor at the Paris Conservatoire, where she taught from 1901 to 1909. Her legacy includes seven recordings made for Zonophone (1902) and Odeon (1904), preserving her artistry for posterity.
