EMMA VECLA (ERNESTINE LOUISE TELMAT, ALTERNATE STAGE NAME ADRIENNE TELMA) (MAGHNIA, ALGERIA, 11 JANUARY, 1877 – MILAN, 29 MAY, 1972)
She was of French descent, and her real name was Ernestine Louise Telmat. After completing her education in Paris, she made her debut there in 1898 at the Opéra-Comique, performing in Mignon by Ambroise Thomas. Following a career as an opera singer in France, Spain, and South America, she transitioned fully to operetta, becoming one of the most celebrated operetta singers in Italy from 1907 to 1930. Her repertoire also included Mimi in La Bohème, Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, Lakmé in Delibes’ opera of the same name, and Zerline in Auber’s Fra Diavolo. In Italy, she was affectionately known as the “Queen of the Operetta.”
