Elda di Veroli (Soprano) (Rome 1892 – Rome 1981)

She studied voice with Ersilia Ceresoli, making her debut as Gilda in ''Rigoletto'' at the Teatro Traiano in Civitavecchia in 1919. In the same year she sang the role of Norina in  ''Don  Pasquale''  at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. She then appeared often at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, as well as at the Teatro Costanzi, and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. In the season of 1922-23 she was engaged by the Italian  Opera in Holland, and in 1924 she had great success at the Teatro Carcano in Milan. In 1929 she had a lengthy series of appearances at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo, and further guest appearances brought her to Bologna, Trieste,  Verona, and Padua. She also toured Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and Poland. In 1926 she appeared as Gilda at the Opera in Paris. Her career came to a close in 1937 because she was Jewish, and she was forced to remain hidden all  of 1943-1944. At the end of the War she appeared again in a concert broadcast over the Italian Radio.

Lidya Lipkovskaya (Lydia Lipkovska) (Soprano) (village Babino, Bessarabian region of the Russian Empire 1884 – Beirut, Lebanon 1958)




Since 1903 she studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Natalya Iretskaya. In 1907, 1909 and 1914 she perfected her vocal art under Vittorio Vanza at Milan. She made her debut in 1904 at the St. Petersburg Russian-Italian Private Opera House singing the role of Gilda in ‘’Verdi’s ‘’Rigoletto’’ opposite Nikolai Figner, who appeared in that performance as Duke. From 1906 to 1909, 1911 to 1913 and in the 1916-1917 season Lipkovskaya performed at the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre. In 1908,  1911 and in 1929 she made guest appearances at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. She also sang in  Kiev, Odessa, Baku, Tbilisi, at the St. Petersburg National House and from 1913 to 1916 at the S. Zimin’s Private Opera House. From 1914 to 1915 she was a sololist of the Petrograd's Theatre of Musical Drama. In the 1915-1916 season she appeared in Kiev. In 1909 she sang with great success at La Scala, Milan where she appeared in ‘’Lakme’’, ‘’La Traviata’’ and ‘’I Puritani’’. The same year she also performed in Paris (Grand Opera), London (Covent Garden) and Boston, where she sang in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’ opposite her husband, the great russian baritone Georgy Baklanov. From 1908 to 1912 she sang at the MET, New York, wher she made her debut as Gilda in ‘’Rigoletto’’. There, in 1909, she sang in ‘’Rigoletto’’ as a partner of Enrico Caruso and Mario Sammarco. In the 1910-1911 season she made guest appearance at the Chicago Opera House. In 1910 she also sang in Montreal. In the same period (1910-1911) she appeared at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra Comique, Paris. Here she performed in ‘’La Traviata’’, ‘’Lakme’’ and ‘’Thais’’. In 1910 she sang at the Opera House of Rome and then at La Scala, Milan in ‘’La Sonnambula’’ and in other operas under Arturo Toscanini.  Lipkovskaya retired from the stage in 1941. She sang for the last time at Odessa in Verdi’s ‘’La Traviata’’ She had a beautiful silvery, but warm voice and an amazing vocal range (she could easily sing F in the 3rd octave). Her technical ability was perfect and allowed her to perform even the most difficult passaggi with ease. She was also an eccentric woman, a great actress, and had an amazing natural feeling.

Charlotte Marie Agussol (Soprano) (Toulon 1863 - Paris 1953)

Till 1887 she studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and made her debut at the Paris Grand Opéra in 1888 as Urbano in ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’ of Meyerbeer. In 1888 she sang the role of Stéphano in the première of Gounod’s ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ with Adelina Patti, Jean and Édouard de Reszke, Jean-Francois Delmas and Léon Melchissèdec. In 1893 she sang at the Grand Opéra in the French première of ‘’Walkiria’’. In 1899 she sang there the role of Ascagne in the première of ‘’La Prise de Troie’’ of  Berlioz. Later she active at the Grand Opéra as comprimario.

Sergei Yudin (Tenor) (Moscow 1889 – Moscow 1963)


He studied singing with Gregori Alchevsky and A. M. Dodonov. From 1911 to 1914 and from 1919 to 1941 he appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow. There he made his debut in ‘’Ruslan and Ludmila’’ (1911). From 1914 to 1919 Yudin was  a soloist of the S. Zimin’s Opera House. In the 1914-1915 season he made guest appearances in Kazan.

Aristide Anceschi (Baritone) (Modena 1866 - Milano 1938)

Probably he made his debut in 1892 at  the  dell'Arena Azeglio in Bologna as Silvio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. Already in 1894 he appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in ‘’Manon’’. In 1900 he sang at the Politama Regina Margherita in Cagliari the role of Scarpia in the premiere of Puccini’s ‘’Tosca’’. In 1901 Anceschi made successful guest performances at the Teatro Khediviale in Cairo. Guest appearances followed in Rio de Janeiro, San Paolo, Rosario di Santa Fи, Santiago del Cile and Valparaiso. In 1905 he performed at the Teatro San Carlo in  Lisbon as in ‘’Rigoletto’’, in 1907 again at the Teatro Municipal of Santiago de Chile as Sharpless in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. In 1914 Anceschi sang at Covent Garden in Puccini’s ‘’La Boheme’’. He retired from the stage in 1926 and then taught singing in Milan.

Ermanno Pezzutti (Tenor)


He studied with the teacher Serafino Di Falco and probably made his debut in 1902 at the Politeama Verdi in Sassari as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. The next year, he performed at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan singing the role of Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’. In 1905 Pezzuti made guest appearance at the Waldorf Theatre in London. Here he sang in ‘’Adriana Lecouvreur’’, ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’, ‘’Fiorella’’ and ‘’Traviata’’. Then he appeared with success in Parma (Teatro Regio), Genova (Politeama Genovese), Malta (Teatro Reale), Napoli (Teatro San Carlo) etc. Pezzutti continues to appear in different italian opera houses untill 1933 making his last performace at the Teatro Alfieri in Asti as Calaf in ‘’Turandot’’. Probably he went to sing abroad only once – In London.

He studied in Padova with the composer Orefice and he made his debut in 1898 at Sociale of Lonigo in ‘’La Boheme’’. He withdrew in the thirties and spent the last years at the "Casa di Riposo G.Verdi" in Milan.

Lodovico Tomarchio (Tenor) (Catania 1886 - Los Angeles 1947)

He studied in Catania with the teacher Adernò and made his debut in 1910 at the Teatro Costanzi of Rome as Arlecchino in ‘’Pagliacci’’. Since 1923 he started to appear in  the United States where he settled in 1931. After the withdrawal settled in Los Angeles where he devoted himself to teaching. He took part in several films including the famous "Adventure to Vallechiara" with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
