ERNESTO CAMMAROTA (BARI, ITALY, 23 DECEMBER, 1859 – ZAGREB, CROATIA, 28 FEBRUARY, 1934)
He made his debut in Italy in 1882. Among his early performances, he sang at the Arena of Siracusa in Verdi’s La Traviata (1884) and at the Politeama of Piacenza in Marchetti’s Ruy Blas (1886).
In 1887, he was engaged by the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, where he achieved immense success and performed until the end of his career in 1924. During his tenure, he appeared in many local premieres, including Mefistofele, La Bohème (1898), Pagliacci (1894), Cavalleria Rusticana, Werther, and The Tales of Hoffmann. In 1897, he sang the title role in the premiere of Lisinski’s opera Porin.
Following his retirement, he worked as a pedagogue in Zagreb, contributing significantly to the development of Croatian opera.
The opera Tosca was first introduced to Croatian audiences by Italian opera companies, in Rijeka in 1902 and in Split in 1904. The first performance in Croatian took place in Zagreb on October 6, 1911, conducted by Milan Zuna (1881–1960). Tosca was sung by Anka Horvat (1884–1948), Cavaradossi by the veteran Ernesto Cammarota (1861–1934), a lead singer of the Zagreb Opera, and Scarpia by Marko Vušković (1877–1960), one of the pillars of Croatian opera.
