AMERICAN TENOR ALBERT SCHOTT CDR

ALBERT SCHOTT

He was born in America but studied singing in Germany and Italy. He made his debut alongside his uncle, the famous German heldentenor Anton Schott, in a recital in Düsseldorf and was subsequently engaged at German theaters, including those in Kiel, Dortmund, and Trier.

There are some very rare recordings of his voice on the Symphonion label. Although these recordings bear the note “Washington” on their labels, they were actually made in Leipzig in 1910-1911.

WASHINGTON SINGERS. The Washington, D. C.,

“Evening Star ” contains the following: “I met one young man during my trip abroad, ” said Mr. E. F. Droop, who has just returned from Europe, ” of whom Washington may well be proud. It was Mr. Albert Schott, of Georgetown, who went abroad about two years ago with his cousin, Anton Schott, the great German tenor, to cultivate his voice. Young Schott has been diligently studying under his cousin’s guidance, and has developed a most wonderful organ. It is a tenor robusto of excellent quality, of great range and power and he will certainly make a sensation. I heard him sing the whole rôle of ‘Manrico’ in ‘Il Trovatore’ to a piano accompaniment in the Castle Aherberg, near Nuremberg, and in the ‘Di Quella Para’ he struck C with a full ringing chest tone which was positively electrifying. He has just received his first study engagement at the Royal Opera in Dresden, which is directed by Schuch. He had offers from Munich and several other cities, but concluded to accept the Dresden engagement, which is for a term of years. Young Schott will make a great name for himself one of these days and be a credit to Washington.”

Anton Schott, the well-known German tenor, while recently fulfilling a short engagement with the Königsberg Opera, has according to the Münchener Theater Anzeiger , diversified his sojourn at the Northern University town by delivering lectures upon the interesting, albeit strictly non- vocal, subject of the cultivation of the American black perch. The genial Wagner-singer, who has not long ago returned from a visit from the United States, it should be added, is also an enthusiastic farmer and piscatorial sportsmen.
