ROMANIAN BARITONE JEAN ATHANASIU (1885-1938) CDR

JEAN ATHANASIU (BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, 28 FEBRUARY, 1885 - BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, 20 NOVEMBER, 1938)

First he studied in Bucharest, then under Ernesto Colli and Manlio Bavagnoli in Milan. He made his debut in 1912 at the Teatro Sociale in Salò as Silvio in ''Pagliacci''. He was promoted by the famous baritone Mattia Battistini and appeared in 1913 at the Teatro Regio in Turin as Amonasro in ''Aida''. In 1914 he created for Palermo the role of Amfortas in ''Parsifal''. After outbreak of the First World War he went back to his native roumanian country, sang there in Bucharest and Jassy as well as in 1917 in Odessa. In 1919 he belonged in Bucharest to the founders of the Roumanian National Opera in which he was celebrated in roles like Rigoletto, Scarpia, Amonasro and Don Giovanni. In 1921 he made guest appearances in Brescia and Ferrara and then belonged in the 1921-1930 seasons to the most popular singers of the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. In Italy he sang under the name Giovanni Atanasio. In the 1923-1925 seasons, as a partner of Roumanian tenor Trajan Grosavescu, he appeared with great success at the Vienna People's Opera. He also sang at the Berlin State Opera as a guest. He died at the height of his career from typhoid fever.

FRANCESCO SIGNORINI THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS CDR

FRANCESCO SIGNORINI (ROME, 9 DECEMBER, 1861 - ROME, 30 OCTOBER, 1927)

He trained at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and made his debut in 1882 at the Teatro Politeama in Florence and after 1897 sang regularly in leading dramatic Italian roles at La Scala. In 1898 he appeared at the opera house of Odessa, in 1902 at the German Theatre in Prague. In 1890 he appeared with success as Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ at the Teatro Pagliano in Firenze. He had around the turn of the century a significant success in all Italian major opera houses. In 1907 He made guest appearances in San Francisco and Los Angeles and also appeared in Buenos Aires. In 1910 he retired from the opera stage and taught in Rome.

FRANCISCO VIÑAS (VIGNAS) (BARCELONA, 27 MARCH, 1866 – BARCELONA, 14 JULY, 1933)

First he studied at the Conservatory of Barcelona with Gonzalo Tintorer, then with Goula. He made his debut in 1888 at Mataro. In the same year he made his debut at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Lohengrin with great success. In 1889 Viñas already appeared at La Scala in Milan again as Lohengrin with triumph. In the following years he performed at the principal Italian theaters like Teatro Regio in Turin and Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa addiding to his repertoire ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, ‘’Mefistofele’’ and ’’Africana’’. In 1893 Viñas made his debut at Covent Garden in London. The next year he made his debut at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 1895 he appeared for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In the same year he went to Genoa to substitute the tenor Giovanni Battista De Negri in ‘’Tannhauser’’. In 1897 he was in Rome, where he sang at the Teatro Costanzi. In 1904 Viñas appeared at La Scala in A. Franchetti’s ‘’Germania’’. In 1908 he guested at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon, where he sang in ‘’Tristan e Isolda’’. In 1913 together with Margot Kaftal, Cesare Formichi and Vincenzo Bettoni, he sang the role of Parsifal at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. In 1916 he returned to the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona to appear in ‘’Tannhäuser’’. In 1918 he sang fot the last time on the opera stage (Teatro Liceo, Barcelona) in J. Manen’s opera ‘’Acte’’. Viñas married Giulia Novelli, a mezzo-soprano with whom he had sung ‘’Carmen’’ in Palermo (1892). Viñas also sang the role of Turiddu in the first performance of P. Mascagni's ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana‘’ in England (1893). He had a powerful heroic tenor voice and was thought to be the successor to the superb Spanish tenor Julián Gayarre.

She studied singing with Carignani in Milan. Her stage debut took place in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi of Rome as Suzel in P. Mascagni’s ‘’Lamico Fritz’’, while the famous tenor Fernando De Lucia sang the role of Fritz. In the same season they also appeared together in G. Puccini’s ‘Boheme’’. During the following 15 years she performed with success not only at the famous Italian opera houses, but also in South American theatres. Among her best roles were Violetta in "La Traviata", Tosca, Mimi in ‘’Boheme’’ and Manon in ‘’Manon Lescaut’’.

From 1895 to 1896 she appeared at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, later she sang in Milan, Buenos Aires (1907-8), Paris (Grand Opera, 1910), Warsaw (1910), Moscow (sang both at the Solodovnikov and Zimin Opera Theatres as Gilda, Juliet and Rosina with Mattia Battistini), she also appeared in Kiev (1916), Rome (1916) and Petrograd (1916-17). Her best roles where Margherita (''Faust''), Margherita Di Valois (''Gli Ugonotti'') and Gilda (''Rigoletto'').

THANOS FERENTINOS (CARDIFF, WALES, UNITED KINGDOM 27. 11. 1919 - ATHENS, GREECE 2. 07. 1993)

Athanasios Frederick Ferendinos was born in Cardiff on the 27th of November 1919 to his Greek father,Efthimios Ferendinos (Master Mariner in the Merchant Navy) and his Canton-born mother, Florence E. Lewis. Tano’s initial stay in Cardiff was brief because when he was four years old he moved with his parents and older sister Marjory (born in Cardiff on 23 February 1913) to the Greek Island of Ithaca, where he spent his formative years. Early in 1947 he returned to Wales where he was introduced via his agent to EMI records. Gigli, having listened, to him in a recording session acknowledged him as a future star. George Polyzoides refers to the fact that Tano held, as a prized possession, a signed photograph of Gigli with the dedication “to my successor”. EMI’s record sales department, realizing that they had a tenor with a “voice of beautiful quality”, signed him up on 27 November 1947.During this period he appeared at Alexandra Palace in concert with Geraldo and his dance band, sang at the Albert Hall and made his first record on the Columbia label. The Columbia contract was replaced by an HMV contract in 1950 but by this time Tano was studying in Italy and planning to travel to Argentina so the contract lapsed. Between 1947-1955, he made over twenty recordings. His multi-layer career began to blossom. He was a regular performer on radio, appearing, for example with Albert Sandler and the Palm Court Orchestra on a BBC Light Programme concert broadcast. In the 1950’s he appeared with the Jimmy Campbell Orchestra and sang with Fred Alexander and his players on the Light Programme on 28th of October 1950. He toured the UK with a production of Lilac Time: for instance, at the Leeds Empire, the Bristol Hippodrome, the Grand Theatre and the WolverHampton. When he picked up his career in Athens and started performing it was a difficult time for Tano due to the lack of success and the behavior of his compatriots contributed to the end of his career and left a residue of bitterness that remains to this day. To provide to for his family he worked from home as an English tutor and in leisure time he honed his artistic talents as a painter and sculptor .Ultimately, health problems, including diabetes, took their toll and he died in Athens, on 2nd July 1993 age 73.

He studied singing in St. Petersburg under N. Spasski, who trained him as bass. He took vocal lessons also from R. Nuvel-Nordi. From 1912 to 1916 he sang at the St. Petersburg Musical Drama and at the National House (1913—18). Appeared also in Moscow. In 1919 Iwanzoff went to Germany and during the 1920’s made guest appearances in Paris (Grand Opera, 1921), Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona (1921, 1922), on italian cities, Washington, D.C., New York. In 1930’s Iwanzoff lived in USA, where he started to sing with success as tenor in ‘’The Queen of Spades’’ of P. Tchaikovsky and in other operas.

ROSINA STORCHIO (VENICE, 19 JANUARY, 1876 – MILAN, 24 JULY, 1945)

She was an important Italian lyric soprano who starred in the world premieres of operas by Puccini, Leoncavallo, Mascagni and Giordano. Renowned throughout her homeland for her vivacious acting and sparkling stage presence, she possessed a smallish voice which deteriorated prematurely due to hard use, over-parting, and flaws in her technique. Born in Venice, Storchio studied at the Milan Conservatory before making her operatic debut as Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen at Milan’s Teatro Dal Verme in 1892. Three years later, she debuted at Italy's most famous opera house, La Scala, Milan, performing in Massenet’s Werther. Milan became her home base from then on, but she also appeared during the pre-World War I period at theatres in other key Italian cities, including Rome and her native Venice. She toured South America and Spain, too, and undertook singing engagements in Paris and Moscow, unwisely venturing parts as heavy as that of Tosca in Puccini's opera of the same name. In 1921, by which time her voice was in marked decline, she sang in Chicago and New York City. Her final public performance was as Cio-Cio San in Puccini's Madama Butterfly at Barcelona in 1923. (She had sung this same part in the first performance of Butterfly, at La Scala, in 1904.) Storchio died in Milan near the end of World War II.
