ANGELO ANGIOLETTI (BARCELONA, 22 JANUARY, 1862 – BARCELONA, 14 MAY, 1909)
His real name was Jaume Bachs i Roses. In 1890, he made his debut as a baritone at the Teatro Miguel de Cervantes in Málaga, singing with the company of José Tolosa. Prominent members of the company included Emma Nevada, Mariano de Padilla, and Dante Del Papa. In 1891, Angioletti sang at the Teatro Calderón (Valladolid), Teatro Real (Madrid), and Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona). In 1896, he alternated the role of Lohengrin with Viñas at the Teatro di San Carlo. During the same year, he also sang in Un ballo in maschera with Magini-Coletti and Buliciova, and in Doña Flor with Carlo Buti and Buliciova. From there, he went to the Teatro Costanzi, singing in Les Huguenots with Degli Abbati, Padovani, Galli, and Borelli-Angelini (1898). He returned to the Teatro Costanzi to sing Otello in 1908 with De Luca, Melis, and under the baton of Mugnone. Angioletti sang in the premieres of Raimondo Lulio by Bretón at the Teatro Lírico in Madrid (June 1902) and Emporium by Enric Morera (January 1906). In 1905, he replaced Leo Slezak as Tannhäuser at La Scala in what was reportedly Slezak’s only fiasco. Angioletti specialized in Wagnerian and late Verdi roles.
