ATTILIO BARBIERI (PARMA, 26/05/1896 – MILAN, 23/06/1967)

He was an artisan of the chisel and a member of the Choral Euterpe. A patron, the industrialist Richard Barilla, supported his studies in singing—initially with Annibale Pizzarelli, then with the tenor Giuseppe Borgatti, and finally with Amilcare Zanella. Despite the high hopes Borgatti had for him, true fame never materialized.

In August 1926, he performed in a concert organized by Borgatti’s school at the Teatro di Colorno. A week later, he sang under Renzo Martini’s direction as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Teatro Politeama Reinach in Parma, where he reprised the role the following spring. On April 26, 1927, he participated in a concert with Borgatti at the Grand Hall of the Liceo Musicale in Bologna.

In October 1927, he appeared at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan in Mascagni’s Isabeau. Shortly after, he performed in Asti as Radamès in Aida. In 1928, he achieved success in Aida and Il Trovatore at the Teatro Miramare in Tripoli.

During the 1928–29 season at the Teatro Regio di Parma, a string of Radamès singers faltered—Giuseppe Radaelli, Antonino Trantoul, and Francesco Merli all withdrew. For the final two performances, the manager turned to Attilio Barbieri. It was his moment of glory. However, his career subsequently continued on smaller stages.
