GIUSEPPE RESCHIGLIAN (BERGAMO, 15 APRIL, 1875 – AMSTERDAM, 12 SEPTEMBER, 1949)

He began his career as a singer of oratorios and in churches. He made his debut in 1895 at the Teatro Sociale of Pordenone in Ruy Blas. He performed as a lyric tenor in leading Italian theaters, singing roles such as Nemorino in L’Elisir d’amore, Alfredo in La Traviata, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, and Elvino in Bellini’s La Sonnambula. In 1915, he was engaged by an Italian opera company to perform in Holland. Together with soprano Margherita Bevignani and baritone Luigi Mazzoleni, he decided to remain there due to the insecurity caused by the war. The three artists formed an opera troupe and organized performances at the Theatre Carré in Amsterdam in 1918.

The renowned conductor Willem Mengelberg invited him to sing the tenor solo in Verdi’s Requiem. After the First World War, he resumed his career in Italy. At the invitation of his brother Vincenzo Reschiglian (1874-1955), who had been engaged for decades as a comprimario at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, he traveled to the USA. There, he first performed with the San Carlo Opera Company and later at the opera house in Philadelphia (1925-1929). In 1938, he returned to Holland and worked as a vocal pedagogue in Amsterdam. Even in 1941, he gave a concert of modern Italian songs for the Dutch broadcasting company.
