ANNA GRAMEGNA (NAPLES, 1880 – ROME, 1965)

She moved with her family to Russia, where she received her vocal training. She made her operatic debut in 1902 at the Politeama Umberto I in Bari. In 1904, she performed at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo as Preziosilla in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino. In 1908, she sang at the Teatro Ciscutti in Pola in Nozze Istriane by Antonio Smareglia.

In 1919, she performed at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in the Italian (and European) premiere of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, singing the role of Zita. The following year, she appeared at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome as Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. In 1921, she sang in the premiere of Franco Vittadini’s opera Anima allegra at the same theater.

During the 1922–1923 season, she performed at La Scala under Arturo Toscanini, notably participating in the premiere of Ottorino Respighi’s Belfagor on April 23, 1923. Throughout her career, she frequently returned to perform in Rome.

Her international engagements included a guest appearance at the Municipal Theatre of Zurich in 1917, seasons at the opera in Rio de Janeiro (1919–1920 and 1924–1926) where she performed roles such as Amneris and Azucena, and a performance at the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires in 1919. In 1931, she took part in the festival at the Arena di Verona.

After retiring from the stage, she devoted herself to teaching, becoming a vocal pedagogue in Rome.
