JOAN GOULA I SOLEY (SAN FELIU DE GUÍXOLS, 29 MARCH, 1843 – BUENOS AIRES, 10 JULY, 1917)
Born in 1843 in the town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols in the province of Girona, he worked in all facets of music. He studied with Nicolau Manent in Barcelona. He held various positions at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona. He worked as a conductor in Palma de Mallorca (1866-1870), where he founded the Orfeón Mallorquín. In 1870 he was hired in Moscow as conductor at the Imperial Theatre in Moscow. He was director of Italian opera in St. Petersburg. He also conducted in Baden and Hamburg. He conducted five concerts of Verdi’s Requiem Mass at the Liceu with 134 teachers and 102 choristers (the first concert was on 22 August 1875, one year after the premiere in Milan of the aforementioned work).
He moved permanently to Argentina, where he received the consecration of his career. He founded the Buenos Aires Conservatory of Music. He organized a cycle of Spanish opera at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where he presented Els Pirineus , by Felipe Pedrell , a work that had been premiered in 1902 in Barcelona. He conducted the hymn Gloria a España by Anselmo Clavé at the Casal Catalán in Buenos Aires, among other works.
As a composer, he wrote the music for the operetta A orillas del mar by Damas Calvet de Budallés and El testamento de un brujo by José Feliú y Codina. His other works include the dance show Clye o El triunfo de Venus (1899) and a cantata dedicated to the Tsar of Russia, Alexander II.
He died in Buenos Aires in 1917.
