MARGHERITA BEVIGNANI (? 1887 – MILAN, 1921)
She studied with Perilli and made her debut in 1909 at the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi in Treviso as Micaela in Carmen. In the following years, she achieved success on Italian provincial stages, including a notable appearance in 1911 at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo as Regina in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots.
In 1914, she made a guest appearance in Holland, where she had great success performing in La Traviata. When Italy entered the First World War, she attempted to leave Holland by ship. The ship was torpedoed in the English Channel by German submarines, sinking and killing Rosita Cesaretti, a contralto. However, other artists, including Attilio Salvaneschi, Giuseppe Reschiglian, and Margherita Bevignani, survived and returned to Holland, where they remained until the end of the war.
She continued to perform in Holland until 1918. During the influenza epidemic of 1918, she fell ill in Holland. After returning to Italy, she suffered a severe attack of tuberculosis, which ultimately forced her to retire from the stage.
