RUDOLF RITTER (BRÜX, NOW MOST, CZECH REPUBLIC, 19 JANUARY, 1878 – GAILDORF, NR STUTTGART, GERMANY, 3 JUNE, 1966)
Initially, he served as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army (1898–1908). Subsequently, he studied singing at the Vienna Music Academy and made his debut in 1910 at the Volksoper in Vienna, where he remained until 1913. On November 23, 1911, he performed in the premiere of Wilhelm Kienzl’s opera Der Kuhreigen at the Volksoper.
In 1913, he joined the Hofoper in Stuttgart, where he enjoyed significant success for nearly two decades. During his time there, he participated in the premieres of notable operas such as Ulenspiegel by Walter Braunfels (1913) and Eine florentinische Tragödie by Alexander Zemlinsky (1917).
In the 1923–1924 season, he toured North America with the German Opera Company, making a notable guest appearance at the Great Northern Theatre in Chicago in 1923. In 1924, he performed in New York in the U.S. premiere of Kienzl’s opera Der Evangelimann. At the Bayreuth Festival during the 1924–1925 season, he sang the role of Siegfried in the Ring Cycle and, in 1930, portrayed Tannhäuser at the same festival.
In 1926, he achieved great acclaim in South America. From 1929 to 1931, he toured North America again with the Second German Opera Company under the leadership of Johanna Gadski. Additionally, he made guest appearances at prestigious venues, including Covent Garden in London, the Grand Opéra in Paris, the Vienna State Opera (1921–1922), The Hague (1931), and the Stadttheater in Zurich (1916, 1922). At the 1927 Zoppot Festival, he performed the role of Siegfried in Götterdämmerung.
After retiring from the stage in 1933, he settled in Stuttgart, where he worked as a vocal pedagogue. He was married to pianist Gret Hein.
