PIERO BIASINI (VENICE, 6 OCTOBER, 1899 – TREVISO, 3 MAY, 1973)


 


 

He likely made his debut in 1924. Between the 1927 and 1930 seasons, and again in 1934, he performed with great success at the Italian Opera in Holland, taking on roles such as Jago in Verdi’s Otello, Don Carlo in La Forza del Destino, Rigoletto, Scarpia in Tosca, and the father in Charpentier’s Louise, where he partnered with Giuseppina Cobelli and Gilda Dalla Rizza.

In 1932, he joined La Scala, debuting as Albert in Massenet’s Werther. He regularly performed there until 1940 and returned from 1944 to 1950. At La Scala, his repertoire included Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore, Marcello in La Bohème, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Lescaut in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Albert in Werther, Mercutio in Gounod’s Faust, Don Giovanni, and the father in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. In 1932, he participated in the premiere of Zandonai’s opera Una Partita.

At the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1933, he performed as Cinna in Spontini’s La Vestale opposite Rosa Ponselle, and in 1941, he appeared there as Marcello in La Bohème. He sang as Rigoletto at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1932 and as Germont-père in La Traviata at the Teatro Comunale in Florence in 1930.

In 1937, he made guest appearances at Covent Garden, performing as Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, and Ping in Turandot. From 1939 to 1942, he appeared regularly at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, where his roles included Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore. In 1940, he performed as the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro and Jack Rance in La Fanciulla del West at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna.

He also appeared at the Salzburg Festival from 1935 to 1939. In 1948, he guested at the Vienna State Opera as Germont-père and Amonasro. The following year, he performed at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. After retiring in 1950, he settled in Milan, where he worked as a vocal pedagogue.
