POLISH PIANIST HENRYK SZTOMPKA (1901-1964) CDR

 

HENRYK SZTOMPKA (BOGUSŁAWKA, NEAR ŁUCKA, WOŁYŃ, APRIL 1, 1901 – KRAKOW, POLAND, JUNE 21, 1964)

 

He was honored at the 1st International Piano Competition Fryderyk Chopin in Warsaw (1927). He graduated with distinction at the Warsaw Conservatory under Józef Turczyński (1926), then he studied with Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1928-1932). In the years 1945–1964 he taught the piano class at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków (from 1955 as an associate professor, from 1958 a full professor). In 1957 he became the head of the piano department, and in the years 1957-1963 he was the vice-rector. His students included Regina Smendzianka. He also took part in the works of the jury during many piano competitions, including International Piano Competition Fryderyk Chopin in Warsaw (1949, 1955, 1960), the International Competition Marguerite Long and Jacques Thibaud in Paris (1953, 1955, 1959, 1961) and the International Music Competition Peter Tchaikovsky in Moscow (1958, 1962). Honored include The Golden Cross of Merit (1937), the Order of the Banner of Labor, 2nd class (1949), the 1st State Team Award (1950), the Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1955), and the City of Krakow Award (1958). He was buried in Aleja Zasłużonych at the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków.
