MIGUEL VILLABELLA (BILBAO, 1892, 20/12 – PARIS, 1954, 28/6)


 


 

Originally, he was destined to become a businessman and received his education in Paris. He also distinguished himself as a sportsman, notably setting a world record in roller skating. His voice was discovered by the famous baritone Lucien Fugère. In 1917, he sang publicly for the first time in a concert in San Sebastián. During the First World War, he performed for French soldiers.

After further training under Jacques Isnardon in Paris, he made his operatic debut in 1918 at the Grand Théâtre de Poitiers as Cavaradossi in Tosca. In 1920, he was engaged by the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made his debut as Spoletta in Tosca. From 1928, he simultaneously became a member of the Grand Opéra in Paris, debuting as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.

He retired from the stage in 1940 and subsequently worked as a pedagogue in Paris.
