He studied singing under R. Bērziņš and made his debut only after the Second World War in 1946 at the Latvian National Opera in Riga. There he had a long-standing successful career as heroic tenor. He made guest appearances in Helsinki (1950), Canada (1954), Sofia (1961), Warsaw and Lodz (1962); in addition he guested at the leading operatic stages of the Soviet Union, in particular in Moscow and Leningrad. In 1962 his appointment the People's Artist of the Latvian Soviet Republic. His extensive repertoire included Pedro in ‘’Tiefland’’, Ohello, Dimitri in ‘’Boris Godunov’’, Herodes in ‘’Salome’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. Riccardo in ‘’Ballo in maschera’’ and also roles in operas of R. Wagner.
