Heinrich Hensel (Tenor) (Neustadt, Germany 29 Oct 1874 - Hamburg, Germany 23 Feb 1935)



His voice was discovered by the conductor Felix Mottl and he studied under Gustav Walter in Vienna as well as with Eduard Bellwidt in Frankfurt a. M. In 1897 he made his debut in the Stadttheater in Freiburg im Breisgau in ‘’Alessandro Stradella’’ of F. von Flotow. Later he worked as vocal pedagogue in Hamburg. He was married to the dramatic soprano Elsa Hensel-Schweitzer (1871-1937).

Walter Widdop (Tenor) (Norland, near Halifax, Yorkshire, England April 19, 1892 - Hampstead, London, England September 6, 1949)



He studied singing under Percy Pitt, Norman Allin, Arthur Hinchcliffe and Dinh Gilly in London and made his debut in Leeds as Radames in ‘’Aida’’(1923), as a member of the British National Opera Company. He appeared wth this society till 1929. In 1924 he made his debut at Covent Garden in ‘’Siegfried’’, as a partner of Frida Leider. He became one of the first English tenors, who mostly appeared in Richard Wagner’s operas and till 1938, almost annually, sang at Covent Garden, among other things as Tristan opposite Kirsten Flagstad. In 1935 he appeared there as Max in ‘’Freischütz’’ together with Eva Turner. On 25. 6. 1924 he performed at Covent Garden in the premiere of the opera ‘’Judith’’ of Eugène Goossens as Bagoas. In the 1927-1928 season he made guest appearances  at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. He appeared also in Holland and Germanny. He took part in the English première of the 8-th symphony ("Sinfonie der Tausend")  by Gustav Mahler. In North America he appeared only at the concert hall, but not on the stage. Still in 1948 he sang in London the part of Ägisth in ‘’Elektra’’ as a partner of Erna Schlüter. He died suddenly.

First he studied singing in London, then additionally in Italy. Probably he made his debut as a member of the Carl Rosa Opera Company during the 1920s. After his retirement from the stage, he taught and was also choirmaster at the Inghamite Church in Winewall.

He was a pupil of Alberto Randegger in London. In 1879 he gave in Dublin the first concert. He made his debut in 1881 as a member of Carl Rosa Opera Company at Birmingham in ‘’The Bohemian Girl’’ of Balfe.

Louis Musy (Baritone) (Oran, Algeria 1902 – Paris, France 1981)



He received his education at the Conservatoire National de Paris under E. Lorrain, Carré and M. Gallon. He made his debut in 1925 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in ''Le Chemineau'' of Xavier Levoux. He belonged longer than 25 years to this opera house. On 16. 12. 1927 he sang at the Opéra Comique in the premiere of ''Le pauvre matelot'' of Davius Milhaud, on 15. 1. 1930 in  ''Le Roi d'Yvetot'' of Jacques Ibert, on 19. 6. 1935 in ''L'École des Maris'' of E. Bondeville, on 10. 3. 1942 in the premiere of ''Mon oncle Benjamin'' of F. Bousquet. By the end of his artistic career, since 1947, he was active at the Opéra-Comique also as a director. He was married to the contralto Renée Gilly (1906-77).

Lucien Fugère (Baritone) (Paris, France 1848 - Paris, France 1935)



He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under the pedagogues Raguneau and Édouard Batiste. He made first public appearance in 1871 at the Café-Concert Bata-clan in Paris. In 1874 he joined to the operetta theater Bouffes-Parisiens. In 1877 he was engagaed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made his debut as Jean in ‘’Les noces de Jeannette’’ of V. Massé. He became the most popular artist of the Opéra-Comique.

One of his star roles was the Longueville in A. Messager’s ‘’La Basoche’’. Messager composed for the him also the part of the Maître André in his opera ‘’Fortunio’’. In the 1910-1919 seasons he was engaged at the Théâtre Gaîté-Lyrique in Paris; there he sang on 29. 12. 1910 the title part in J. Massenet’s ‘’Don Quichotte’’. Massenet dedicated the score of the opera to him, however, he could not take part in the premiere at Monte Carlo. In 1913 he sang in this opera house in the premiere of the opera ‘’Carmosine’’ of Henri Février. Since 1919 he worked again at the Opéra-Comique and in 1927 appeared as Don Bartolo in G. Rossini’s ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’. In 1897 he made guest appearance at Covent Garden in London as Leporello in ‘’Don Giovanni’’ (his only guest performance abroad!). In the 1906-1910 seasons he sang in Nice and Marseille. During the First World War he gave many concerts before French soldiers. Still in 1932 he appeared at the Opéra-Comique. In 1928 he was appointed the knight of the honorary legion.

She received her education at the Conservatoire of Paris by Louise Grandjean, Hettich and A. Saléza. Then she studied the Italian repertoire under Angelica Pandolfini in Milan. In 1917 she made her debut at the Grand Opéra in Paris in the title part of the opera ‘’Thaïs’’ of J. Massenet. In 1918 she sang at the Opéra de Rouen in the premiere of the opera ‘’Ninon de Lenclos’’ of Mainguenant. In 1920 she had a huge success at the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, where she appeared as Manon, Thaïs and Marguerite in ‘’Faust’’. She also made guest appearances in Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. Then she came back to France, sang at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in ‘’La damnation de Faust’’. At Vichy she appeared in ‘’La Fille de Madame Angot’’ of Lecocq. In 1922 she became a member of the Grand Opéra in Paris, where she performed 15 years. In 1937 she changed to the Opéra-Comique, where she was highly appreciated. She made guest appearances also in Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Egypt, Italy and North Africa. She died suddenly.

Germaine Féraldy (Soprano) (Toulouse, France 1894 - Toulouse, France 1949)



She was trained at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse and at the Conservatoire de Paris. First she appeared at the French provincial operatic stages. In 1924 she joined to the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where she made her debut as Micaela in ‘’Carmen’’. Here she remained active till 1942 and had a huge success as Manon, Marguerite and Traviata. She performed at the Opéra-Comique in the premiere of the opera ‘’Le bon Roi Dagobert’’ (5. 12. 1927, as Natilde) and sang there in 1920 the part of Marie in the first performance of B. Smetana’s ‘’Verkaufter Braut’’. She made guest appearances in Nice, Monte Carlo (1921, as Nedda in ‘’Pagliacci’’), Brussels and London. In 1938 at Rio de Janeiro she performed in C. Gounod’s ‘’Mireille’’ and in A. Adam’s ‘’Si j'étais Roi’’. She was a successful concert singer. After her retirement from the stage, she received a professorship at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse.

Charles Gilibert (Baritone) (Paris, France 1866 - New York, USA 1910)




He was a pupil of the Conservatoire de Paris and he made his debut in 1888 at the Paris Opéra-Comique. In 1891 he joined to the ensemble of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he was highly appreciated and remained till 1900. Here he appeared among other things in the premieres of the operas ‘’Maître Martin’’ of Jan Blockx (1892), ‘’La Vivandière’’ of B. Godard (1896) and ‘’Tijl Ulenspiegel’’ of Jan Blockx (1900). From 1894 to 1909 he made guest appearances at Covent Garden, where on 20. 6. 1894 he sang in the premiere of ‘’La Navarraise’’ of J. Massenet. He sang in London in the premières of G. Charpentier’s ‘’Louise’’ (as father, 1909) and ‘’Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame’’ of J.  Massenet (1906, as Boniface). In 1900 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York and made his debut as Herzog in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’. He belonged to the ensemble of this opera house till 1903. At the Metropolitan Opera he performed in the following opera premières:

His voice was discovered by Achille Tondeur. He studied with him and at the Conservatoire Royal de Mons under Édouard Martiny. He made his debut in 1918 at the Opera House in Mons. In the 1919-1921 seasons he appeared at the Opera House of Lüttich, then, from 1921 to 1923, performed at the Opera House in Strasbourg, where he sang parts of Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’, Mephisto and the Valentin in ‘’Faust’’, Nilakantha in ‘’Lakmé’’ and Tonio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. In 1923 he joined to the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, and till 1951 belonged to the leading members of this most significant Belgian opera house. He also made guest appearances in Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lyon, Vichy, Ghent, Hague and in the 1931-1932 season at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. In the 1934-1935 season he appeared at the Paris Grand Opéra as Rigoletto, Wolfram in ‘’Tannhäuser’’, Hérode in ‘’Hérodiade’’, Amonasro in ‘’Aida’’ and the Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’. In Brussels he worked in the premières of the operas:

His repertoire included also Amfortas in ‘’Parsifal’’, Alfio in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, Scarpia in ‘’Tosca’’, Pizarro in ‘’Fidelio’’, Athanaël in ‘’Thaïs’’, Sebastiano in "Tiefland", Gunther in ‘’Sigurd’’ and the Jochanaan in ‘’Salome’’.
