TERESA ARKEL (LVOV, UKRAINE 1861 – MILAN, 1 JULY, 1929)

 

 

 

 

She studied at the Lvov Conservatory and with Luise Dustmann in Vienna. She made her concert debut in Lvov in 1883 and her stage debut as Valentina in Gli Ugonotti in 1884.

In 1885, she appeared successfully at the opera house in Warsaw as Aida, Selika in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine, and Leonora in Il Trovatore. After returning to Lvov for the 1885-86 season, she moved to Western Europe, performing in Vienna and Paris in 1886.

During the 1886-87 season, she was engaged by the Prague National Theatre, and from 1887-90, she performed at the Municipal Theatre of Hamburg. She then appeared in various prominent European opera houses: Budapest (1888), Milan (1889), Madrid and Bilbao (1890), Odessa (1891), Barcelona (1892), Lisbon (1893 and 1896), and again in Madrid (1894 and 1896).

In 1894, she debuted at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, performing as Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello and as Elsa in Lohengrin. She returned to the Lvov Opera in 1898 and performed at the Warsaw Opera House in 1899. In Madrid, she was notably involved in the premiere of Emilio Serrano’s Dona Juana la Loca.

In 1891, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan, starting with the role of Venus in Tannhäuser alongside Hariclea Darclée. She continued to perform there as Norma and as Desdemona in Otello in 1892. In 1897, she took part in the premiere of Alberto Franchetti’s Signor de Pourceaugnac at La Scala, partnering with Alessandro Bonci.

In 1900, she sang Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. She retired from the stage in the same year and opened a music school in Milan. Her notable students included Claire Dux, Lucette Korsoff, Eugenia Bronskaja, and Irene Eden.
