ALEXANDER BOGDANOVICH (SMOLENSK, 22. 10
(3. 11), 1874 – MOSCOW, 6. 4, 1950)
He was born into a family of teachers and initially
pursued a medical degree, becoming a practicing physician before turning to
vocal studies. He began his training in St. Petersburg with Irena Onnore and
later continued in Milan with notable tenors Augusto Broggi and Fernando
Valero. From 1897, he took occasional lessons from Leonid Sobinov.
Involved in revolutionary student circles, he faced
several reprisals and was arrested in 1901. Thanks to Sobinov’s efforts, he was
released in January 1902. He made his operatic debut in 1906 as Sinodal in
Demon by Rubinstein at the Private Russian-Italian Opera Theatre in St.
Petersburg, where he performed successfully for one season.
Throughout his career, he sang in Tiflis and at the
St. Petersburg National Opera House before joining the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre
as a soloist from 1906 to 1936. He was instrumental in establishing the Opera
Studio there and served as the artistic director of the Stanislavsky Opera
Theatre from 1930. His repertoire included roles such as Tsar Berendey in The
Snow Maiden, Finn in Ruslan and Lyudmila, Faust, Lohengrin, and Alfredo in La
Traviata. His voice was noted for its rare beauty, soft timbre, and mastery of
Italian bel canto technique. Over his long career, he performed in 45 operas at
the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre.
