AUGUSTO SCAMPINI (GARLASCO, 1880 – BARCELONA, 1939)

He studied singing at the Milan Conservatory under del Fiume and made his debut in 1905 in Garlasco as Cavaradossi in Tosca. In 1907, he appeared at the Teatro de la Opera in Buenos Aires as Hérode in Hérodiade by Jules Massenet, and also performed at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Radamès in Aida and as Samson in Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns.

He gained acclaim performing at major opera houses in Italy, Spain, South America, and Russia. Notable engagements include La Scala in the 1910-11 season, where he appeared in Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi and in Saffo by Gaspare Pacini. In 1912, he performed at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as Manrico in Il Trovatore, and in 1915 at the Teatro Politeama in Pisa as Radamès in Aida. During the 1913-14 season, he sang at the German Theatre in Prague, earning comparisons to Enrico Caruso.

In 1916, he performed in Spain and Santiago de Chile. His career was abruptly ended when he volunteered for the Italian army during World War I and lost a leg in combat. Following his injury, he retired from the stage and focused on teaching singing in Barcelona.
