AUGUSTO SCAMPINI (GARLASCO 1880 – BARCELONA 1939)


 

 

 

He studied singing at the Milan conservatory with del Fiume and made his debut in 1905 at Garlasco as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. In 1907 he guested at the Teatro de l’Opera, Buenos Aires in ‘’Hérodiade’’ of J. Massenet. The same year he appeared at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo as Radames in ‘’Aida’’ and as Samson in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of C. Saint-Saëns. Then he sang with great success at the famous opera houses of Italy, Spain, South America and Russia. In the 1910-11 season he appeared at La Scala in ‘’Simon Boccanegra’’ of G. Verdi and in ‘’Saffo’’ by G. Pacini. In 1912 he performed at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome as Manrico in ‘’Trovatore’’, in 1915 at Teatro Politeama, Pisa as Radames in ‘’Aida’’. In the 1913-14 season he sang at the German theatre in Prague. The critics called him the successor of Enrico Caruso. In 1916 he sang in Spain and in Santiago de Chile. In the First World War he announced himself voluntarily to the Italian army and lost in the fights his leg. His career was finished and he taught singing in Barcelona.
