ELLEN BEACH YAW (BORN SEPT. 14, 1868, BOSTON, N.Y., U.S. — DIED SEPT. 9, 1947, WEST COVINA, CALIF.)

First she was a secretary to a New York lawyer, then she studied with Theodore Bjorksten in New York and finally under Mathilde Marchesi de Castrone in Paris. In 1894 she made her concert debut in St. Paul (Minnesota), in 1895 went on tour through Germany and Switzerland. In 1896 she sang at the Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1899 she appeared at the London Savoy Theater in the world premiere of Sullivan's operetta ‘’The Rose of Persia’’. In 1905 she made her opera debut as Lucia di Lammermoor. She sang the same role in a single performance at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1908 opposite Alessandro Bonci. Despite encouraging success on the opera stage, she devoted herself to the whole concert singing and undertook until 1928 major tours in Europe and America. She caused a sensation by the unusual pitch of her soprano voice, which reached to E in altissimo. This phenomenon, which is known only exceptionally to singers (as with Erna Sack, Mado Robin and Wilfriede Lüttgen) is documented by her recordings. She established the "Lark Ellen League" to give concerts in hospitals, homes, and jails; and the "Lark Ellen School for Boys" (she did this early in her career, in the 1890s), later taken over by the Lions Club. Yaw is memorialized in Covina by Lark Ellen Elementary School and Lark Ellen Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares connecting Covina to neighboring West Covina.
