David Stockman (Tenor) (Göteborg 1879 - Stockholm 1951)



He studied in Breslau, making his début in 1906 as Wilhelm Meister (‘’Mignon’’) at the Royal Opera, Stockholm, where he was engaged until 1942. He was the first Swedish Chénier, Mârouf, Hermann (‘’The Queen of Spades’’) and Gennaro (‘’I gioielli della Madonna’’); he also sang Romeo, Raoul (‘’Les Huguenots’’). He created in 1909 for Sweden the part of the Tristan in R. Wagner's ''Tristan und Isolde''. In 1918 he received the order 'Litteris et artibus', in 1929 he became a Swedish court singer.

In 1887 he was engaged for the Copenhagen Opera but soon returned to the Royal Opera House in Stockholm where he remained to the end of his career (1911).

He studied music theory and directing at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels under A. Warnots and was active first as director of chorus and chapel master  at the Dutch Opera in Amsterdam. Then on advising his wife he studied singing under Cornélie van Zanten in Amsterdam. He appeared for the first time as a singer in ‘’Matthäus-Passion’’ by J.S Bach. He began his stage career in 1897 at the Old Dutch Opera in Amsterdam in which remained till 1902. In the 1902-1903 he was engaged by the Opernhaus in Frankfurt am Main, in the 1903-1905 seasons he appeared at the Stadttheater in Hamburg, then from 1905 to 1911 again sang in Frankfurt am Main. In the 1911-1912 season he sang at the Stadttheater in Kiel, from 1912 to 1915 at the Stuttgarter Hofoper. During the First World War he lived in Holland. In 1904 he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival as Walther von der Vogelweide in ‘’Tannhäuser’’. He made guest appearances at the Hofoper in Dresden (1904), Vienna (1905) and Munich (1908), also sang at the Hoftheater in Wiesbaden (1910) and Rotterdam (1911). His repertoire included Walther von Stolzing, Siegried, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Tristan, Raoul in ‘’ Les Huguenots’’ and Manrico in ‘’Il Trovatore’’. He was married to the Dutch soprano Anna Tijssen-Bremerkamp. The end of his life ended tragically. He lived as a pedagogue and music professor in the town Kleve. He was stabbed in front of his house, when he became involved with troublemakers in front of his house.

From 1913 to 1917 he was a soloist of the Theatre of Musical Drama in St. Petersburg, where he appeared as Don Jose, Herman and Parsifal. In 1917 made guest appearances in Odessa. After 1917 he performed as bass at the Teatro Alla Scala sharing roles with Ezio Pinza.

He was the older brother of famous tenor Torsten Ralf (1901-54) and concert/oratorio singer Einar Ralf (1888-1971). First he studied languages at the university of Lund, however, was to be heard since 1905 as an operetta singer at the Södermalms Theater in Stockholm. In 1904 he was the soloist tenor with the USA tour of the university choir of Lund. From 1907 to 1917 he studied singing under the famous baritone John Forsell and Gillis Bratt in Stockholm. In 1918 his debut took place at the Royal Opera in Stockholm as Siegmund in ''Die Walkure''. Till 1940 he had a successful career at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where he was famous as an interpreter of the roles in R. Wagner's operas. In Stockholm he appeared in the premières of the operas ''Kronbruden" by  T. Ranmgström (1922 as Mats), ''Nerone'' of A. Boito (1926), ''Bäckahästen'' of  Kurt Atterberg (as Kristoffer) and Nathanael Berg's ''Engelbrekt''. In 1927 he sang at the Bayreuth Festival as Siegmund. The same year he made guest appearance at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Tristan. In 1925 went on tour in the USA. Later he not only added to his repertoire operettas, but also published translations of about 40 opera and operetta librettos into the Swedish. Since 1908 he was married to the operetta singer Therese Björklund.

After short education he was active as a Chorister at the Theatres in Koblenz und Zürich and joined in 1885 to the Hofoper in Stuttgart. The directorship of the opera house allowed him to perfect his studies by taking a new lessons. After Additional vocal studies he made his debut in this opera house as Lyonel in ‘’Martha’’ (1890). In 1897 he made guest appearances at the Opernhaus in Frankfurt a.M.. He performed also at the Stadttheater in Zürich (1900), Opernhaus in Leipzig (1897), Hoftheater in Wiesbaden (1901) and Karlsruhe (1909), Hofoper in München (1904). His repertoire included Wilhelm Meister in ‘’Mignon’’, Chapelou in ‘’Postillon de Lonjumeau’’, Leopold in ‘’La Juive’’, Alfonso in ‘’La Muette de Portici’’, Tonio in "La figlia del reggimento", Almaviva in ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’, Arnoldo in ‘’Guglielmo Tell’’, Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ and Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’. In 1894 he sang at the Stuttgarter Oper in the premiere of the opera "Der Pfeifer von Hardt" by Ferdinand Langer. He also appeared with success in operettas and was estimated as a concert singer.

He began his career in 1907 at the Hoftheater in Kassel, joined in 1909 to the Stadttheater in Halle/Saale and was engaged in 1912 by the Hoftheater in Braunschweig to which he belonged till the years of the First World War. He was known as an interpriter of the roles in R. Wagner’s operas like the Erik in "Fliegenden Holländer", Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Siegmund in ‘’Die Walkure’’, Siegfried in the Nibelungenring and Parsifal. His repertoire included also Max in ‘’Freischütz’’, Hüon in ‘’Oberon’’ and José in ‘’Carmen’’. He received his education at the Vienna Konservatorium and had successively the following engagements: In the 1906-1909 seasons appeared at Komischen Oper in Berlin, in 1909 at the Raimund Theater in Vienna, from 1910 to 1914 at the Hoftheater in Hannover. Here he further studied under Hans Emge and sang in the 1914-1921 seasons at the Volksoper in Vienna, from 1921 to 1923 at the Staatsoper in Dresden and from 1924 to 1927 at the Staatsoper in Berlin. Then he made guest appearances in Vienna, however, had again in the 1932-1933 season a guest engagement by the Theater in Graz. He gave guest performances at the Opernhaus in Leipzig (1907), Hofoper in Dresden (1909), Deutschen Theater in Prag (1919 and 1920) and Staatsoper in Vienna (1919, 1920, 1925). In 1927 he appeared in Madrid; he travelled around Holland, Italy and Finland. His leading roles were: Pizarro in ‘’Fidelio’’, Wolfram in ‘’Tannhäuser’’, Telramund in ‘’Lohengrin’’, Wotan in ‘’Die Walkure’’, Hans Sachs in ‘’Die meistersinger von Nürnberg’’, Sebastiano in ‘’Tiefland’’, Valentin in ‘’Faust’’, Count di Luna in ‘’Trovatore’’, Amonasro in ‘’Aida’’ and Scarpia in ‘’Tosca’’. In 1920 he appeared at the Volksoper in Vienna in the German première of P. Mascagni’s ‘’Lodoletta’’. As a Jew since 1933 he couldn't sing in Germany and emigrated to the USA. There his son worked under the name Thomas Martin (1910-84) as a conductor and translator of opera librettos. In 1917 he appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste as Kurwenal in ''Tristan und Isolde''.

He made guest appearances in Helsinki (1950), Canada (1954), Sofia (1961), Warsaw and Lodz (1962); in addition he guested at the leading operatic stages of the Soviet Union, in particular in Moscow and Leningrad. In 1962 his appointment the People's Artist of the Latvian Soviet Republic. His extensive repertoire included Pedro in ‘’Tiefland’’, Ohello, Dimitri in ‘’Boris Godunov’’, Herodes in ‘’Salome’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. First he became a bricklayer and then was active as an actor. Then he studied singing and made his debut in 1910 in Riga in "Das Nachtlager von Granada" by C. Kreutzer. In 1912 and 1914 he still appeared in Riga, then in the 1913-1915 seasons was engaged by the Stadttheater in Nürnberg. In  the 1915-1918 seasons he was active at the Theatre of Musical Drama in St. Petersburg. From 1918 to 1944 he was one of the leading singers of the Latvian National Opera in Riga. In 1925 he made guest appearances at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in ‘’Demon’’ by A. Rubinstein and ‘’Prince Igor’’ of  A. Borodin. He sang there also the role of Scarpia in ‘’Tosca’’ as a partner of Gilda dalla Rizza and Tonio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. In the same 1925 he guested at the Grand Opéra in Paris as Amonasro in ‘’Aida’’. As a guest he also appeared at the opera houses of Kaunas, Libau, Tallinn, Helsinki and at the Staatsoper in München in which he performed in  ‘’Fliegenden Holländer’’ and ‘’Otello’’. At the Grand Theatre, Warsaw he appeared as Mephistofele in ‘’Faust’’ by C. Gounod, at the Bolschoi Theatre in Moscow as Rigoletto, Escamillo in ‘’Carmen and Amonasro in ‘’Aida’’. Since 1944 he lived in West Germany, then from 1949 in the USA (San José, California).

He was active first as a businessman, then, studied singing at the Conservatoire in Cologne. Here he was a pupil of Paul Haase, Rudolf Schulz-Dornburg and E. Wolff. In 1906 he began his stage career at the Stadttheater in Elberfeld to which he belonged till 1908. By the Stadttheater in Hamburg he was engaged in the 1908-1909 season, then joined to the Hoftheater in Mannheim and appeared here with great success till 1912. In the 1912-1913 season he sang at the Opernhaus in Düsseldorf and in the 1913-1914 season as a guest at the Hoftheater in Brunswick. Then he took part in the First World War and began his career only again in the 1918-1920 seasons at the Stadttheater in Bielefeld. He guested in 1910 at the Hoftheater in Karlsruhe, likewise in 1910 at the Stadttheater in Bremen. In 1911 he appeared at the Hoftheater in Wiesbaden and in 1914 at the Stadttheater in Basel, after 1920 still sang in Austria, Holland and Belgium. His extensive repertoire included Florestan in ''Fidelio'', Erik in ''Fliegenden Holländer'', Lohengrin, Walther von Stolzing in ''Die meistersinger von nürnberg'',  Tannhäuser, Tristan, José in ''Carmen'', Eleazar in ''La Juive'', Samson in ''Samson et Dalila'', Radames in ''Aida'' and Canio in ''Pagliacci''. After his retirement, he lived in Cologne
