SVEN ADOLF HACK
D'AILLY (STOCKHOLM, 1 JANUARY, 1892 - TÄBY, 14 AUGUST, 1969)
He studied with A. Ekholm and Gillis Bratt in Stockholm. In 1912, he
made his debut with K. Swanström's opera troupe, which toured throughout
Sweden. From 1913 to 1917, he was engaged at the Oscar Theater in Stockholm,
where he achieved great success as an operetta singer. From 1923 to 1947, he
was a member of the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, and from 1939 onward, he
also worked as a stage director at the same institution. His repertoire
primarily focused on character roles. Among his notable parts were the title
role in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Daland in Wagner's The Flying
Dutchman, and Mephisto in Gounod's Faust.
He participated in several world premieres at the Royal Swedish Opera,
including Bäckahästen by Kurt Atterberg (1925), Engelbrekt by Natanael Berg
(1929), Resa till Amerika by Hilding Rosenberg (1932), Fanal by Kurt Atterberg
(1934), and Kathrin by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1939). He also took part in
numerous Swedish premieres, notably: Max von Schillings’s Mona Lisa (1924),
Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (1926, as the doctor), Richard Strauss’s Ariadne
auf Naxos (1926), Humperdinck’s Königskinder (1926), Borodin’s Prince Igor
(1933), and Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West (1934).
After retiring from the stage and concert platform, he worked in Stockholm as a speech and singing teacher. He made a number of interesting recordings on the HMV, Orchestrola, Bravo, and Ultraphon labels, primarily featuring selections from his operetta repertoire.
