GEORG CONNY HJALMAR
MOLIN (NORRA SANDSJÖ, JÖNKÖPING COUNTY, 9 NOVEMBER, 1885 - SOLNA, 30 SEPTEMBER
1943)
He initially pursued a career as a primary school teacher and received
his first vocal training from 1907 to 1912 under Oscar Lejdström at the Royal
Conservatory of Stockholm. He made his debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in
1911 as Count di Luna in Il Trovatore
and as Valentin in Gounod’s Faust.
He later continued his studies with Raimund von zur Mühlen in London and Boyer
in Paris.
From 1915 to 1940, he was a member of the Royal Opera in Stockholm,
where he performed a wide repertoire that included both heroic and comic
baritone roles, notably several Wagnerian characters. His highlights included
Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde,
Amfortas in Parsifal, Germont
in La Traviata, Amonasro in Aida, the title role in Verdi’s Falstaff, and Escamillo in Carmen.
He took part in several important world premieres: in 1919 in Wilhelm
Peterson-Berger’s Domedagsprofeterna,
in 1932 in Hilding Rosenberg’s Resa
till Amerika, in 1936 in Nathanael Berg’s Judith, in 1939 in Rosenberg’s Marionetter, and in 1940 in Gunnar de Frumerie’s Singoalla. In 1920, he also sang in
the Stockholm premieres of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier and Puccini’s Il Tabarro.
He was highly regarded as a concert and oratorio soloist. More than 50
recordings of his voice survive on Odeon, Pathé, and HMV labels.
