OTAKAR MÁCHA (KLAGENFURT,
31 JANUARY, 1895 –BADEN BEI WIEN, LATE 1955)
He was descended from a Czech family and received his first vocal
training at the Conservatoire in Prague under Karel Burian. He then continued
his studies with August Iffert in Dresden. He made his debut in 1915 at the
Municipal Theatre of Pilsen, where he remained until 1918. He then joined the
Vinohradské Divadlo (Theatre in Vinohrady) in Prague.
In 1920, he was engaged as a heroic tenor by the German Land Theatre
in Prague, where he primarily performed roles from Richard Wagner's repertoire.
During the 1927–1929 seasons, he appeared at the theatre in Saarbrücken,
followed by a season (1929–1930) at the Municipal Theatre of Münster. From 1930
to 1933, he was engaged at the German Theatre in Teplitz-Schönau, and in the
1933–1934 season at the German Theatre of Aussig (Ústí nad Labem).
From 1934 to 1937, he appeared as a guest at various Czech theatres,
including performances at the National Theatre in Prague. Between 1939 and
1942, he was once again a member of the German Theatre in Brünn (Brno).
His repertoire included such roles as Florestan in Fidelio, Max in Der
Freischütz, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Verdi’s Otello, Canio in Pagliacci, Don José
in Carmen, and Samson in Samson et Dalila by Saint-Saëns.
He was married to the dancer Maria Klimesch. He spent his later years
in Baden, near Vienna.
