GEORGE LLOYD-CHANDOS (LONDON, 6 SEPTEMBER, 1862 – BEXHILL-ON-SEA, 9 AUGUST, 1950)

 

 

 


He was born William Francis Lloyd on 6 September 1862 at 31 Exeter Street, Marylebone. In October 1882, he was appointed tenor in the choir of St George’s, Campden Hill, Kensington. In October 1890, he became Principal Tenor of St Marylebone Parish Church. Until January 1895, he performed under the name "Francis Lloyd," after which he adopted the name "Lloyd Chandos." In April 1896, he appeared as tenor soloist in Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Esther Palliser, Clara Butt, and Charles Santley, conducted by Sir Joseph Barnby. On 16 November 1898, in Sunderland, he sang "Onaway! Awake, Beloved!" in the first public performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast. His last known concert took place at the Oakfield Congregational Church, Shepherd’s Bush, in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Fund for Distressed Mining Areas, with Carrie Tubb and Thalben Ball. He died in Bexhill-on-Sea on 9 August 1950, aged eighty-seven.
