ELLEN BRANDT-FORSTER, ALSO ELLEN FORSTER-BRANDT (VIENNA, 11 OCTOBER 1866 – BADEN BEI WIEN, 16 JULY 1921)

At the age of 14, she began studying singing with Louise Dustmann and Emilie Dorr in Vienna. She made her debut in 1885 at the Danzig City Theater as Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust. In 1886, she performed at the Bayreuth Festival as the solo Blume in Parsifal. In 1887, she was appointed to the Vienna Court Opera, where she remained until the end of her career.

On February 16, 1892, she sang the role of Sophie in the premiere of Massenet’s opera Werther at this opera house. In 1889, she appeared in the Vienna premiere of Weber’s Die drei Pintos (in the new adaptation by Gustav Mahler). In 1891, she appeared in the premiere of Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne as Bastienne. On August 21, 1896, she took part in the premiere of Goldmark’s opera Das Heimchen am Herd.

She also sang Marie in Der Trompeter von Säckingen, Eva in Die Meistersinger, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Marie in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, and Micaela in Carmen. She was also successful as a concert and lieder singer and often performed at court concerts in Vienna. In 1891, she appeared in a celebratory concert at the Salzburg Mozart Centenary Celebration.

In 1905, she retired from the stage in the role of Lola in Cavalleria rusticana. Her voice has been preserved on several rare G&T records made in Vienna in 1902.
