EYVIND LAHOLM (EAST
CLAIR (WISCONSIN), 14 OCTOBER, 1894 – NEW YORK CITY, 19 JULY, 1958)
He was of Swedish origin, and his real name was Jon Edwin Johnson.
After serving in the First World War with the American Navy, he studied singing
under William S. Brady in New York. He first appeared in the United States in
operetta theaters, but his operatic career truly began in Europe.
He made his operatic debut in 1924 at the Stadttheater in Essen as
Canio in Pagliacci, remaining
there until 1928. From 1928 to 1930, he was engaged by the Staatstheater in
Wiesbaden, and in the 1930–1931 season, he appeared at the Staatsoper in
Stuttgart. Between 1932 and 1938, he was a member of the Opernhaus in Frankfurt
am Main.
In 1929, he made a guest appearance at the Berlin Kroll-Oper as Erik
in Der fliegende Holländer. In
1934, he toured with the Frankfurt Opera ensemble to Amsterdam, where he sang
the title role in Rienzi. In
1935, he performed at the Staatsoper in Vienna, and in 1937, he took part in
the festival at the Waldoper in Zoppot. In 1938, he appeared at the Arena di
Verona as Tannhäuser.
In 1939, he gave a successful recital in New York and was a member of
the Metropolitan Opera until 1941.
