WILHELM GOMBERT (BERLIN,
2 SEPTEMBER, 1886 - CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, 16 APRIL, 1964)
He made his debut in the 1909–10 season at the Belle Alliance Theater
in Berlin and sang at the Berlin Volksoper from 1910 to 1911, the Mainz City
Theater from 1913 to 1921, and the Cologne Opera House from 1921 to 1926. In
1926, Bruno Walter engaged him at the Berlin Municipal Opera, where he achieved
particular success in buffo roles. In 1928, he took part in the premiere of
Julius Bittner's opera Die Mondnacht
(The Night of the Moon).
From 1927 to 1928, he appeared at London’s Covent Garden Opera in some
of his most celebrated roles: Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Jacquino in Fidelio, and David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In
1929, he performed at the Sopot Festival at the Forest Opera. He also made
guest appearances in Amsterdam (1930) and Brussels (1931).
In 1924, he had participated in the premiere of Franz Schreker’s opera
Irrelohe at the Cologne Opera
House. Later, in 1932, at the Berlin Municipal Opera, he took part in the
premieres of Schreker’s Der Schmied
von Gent and Kurt Weill’s Die
Bürgschaft.
In 1934, he was forced to leave Germany for political reasons, first
settling in Sweden and later emigrating to North America. He ultimately worked
as a voice teacher in Chicago.
He recorded the quintet from Die Meistersinger for Parlophon in 1926, with Emmy Bettendorf, Luise Mark-Lüders, Carl-Martin Öhmann, and Michael Bohnen, as well as a disc of Rhenish songs. For Tri-Ergon, he mostly recorded light songs.
