EMIL BURIAN (RAKOVNÍK, 12 DECEMBER, 1876 – PRAGUE, 9
OCTOBER, 1926)
He was the younger brother of the famous Czech tenor Carl Burrian
(also Karel Burian, 1870–1924). He studied singing under Franz Pivoda in
Prague. In 1895, he made his debut at the Opera House in Cologne, then sang in
Ostrava (Mährisch Ostrau) and Brno (Brünn). During the 1899–1901 seasons, he
appeared at the Opera House in Agram (Zagreb), and from 1902 to 1904 at the
Municipal Theatre in Pilsen. After engagements at the opera houses in Nuremberg
and Freiburg i. Br. (1904–1906), he joined the Dresden Court Opera for the
1906–1907 season. At that time, his brother Carl also worked there. In the
1908–1910 seasons, he performed at the Hamburg Municipal Theatre.
In 1910, he was engaged by the Prague National Opera, where he
remained one of its most significant singers until his death. He was also
highly respected as a concert performer. His son, Emil František Burian
(1904–1959), became a noted composer, stage manager, and director.
