EDITH CLEGG (? 1877 - ?)

She studied with Johan Acton in Blackburn, Hermann Klein in London, and Jacques Bouhy in Paris. She made her debut on January 12, 1906, at the Prince of Wales' Theatre in London in the world premiere of Liza Lehmann's The Vicar of Wakefield. In 1909, she appeared at the Covent Garden Opera in London in the world premiere of Edward Naylor's opera The Angelus. In 1911, she sang Suzuki in Madame Butterfly there alongside Emmy Destinn and continued to perform in several smaller roles at the house.

From 1915 to 1920, she was engaged by the Beecham Opera Company. In addition to Suzuki, her notable roles included the Mother in Charpentier's Louise and Maddalena in Rigoletto. In 1917, she appeared in the English premiere of Bizet's opera La jolie fille de Perth in Manchester under Sir Thomas Beecham. She also participated in an opera tour of Australia and toured Canada with the Quinlan Opera Company.

From 1922 to 1923, she was a member of the British National Opera Company in London, where she again performed the Mother in Louise and appeared in Offenbach operettas. She also enjoyed a distinguished career in England as a concert alto, particularly in oratorio and lieder.

In 1912, she married the renowned bass-baritone Norman Allin (1884–1973).

Recordings: She made rare acoustic recordings for HMV, including the quartet from Rigoletto with Rosina Buckman, Maurice D'Oisly, and Frederick Austin. In 1982, a Schubert Lied was transcribed to LP.
