?)
She studied with Johan Acton in Blackburn, Hermann Klein in London,
and Jacques Bouhy in Paris. She made her debut on January 12, 1906, at the
Prince of Wales' Theatre in London in the world premiere of Liza Lehmann's The Vicar of Wakefield. In 1909, she
appeared at the Covent Garden Opera in London in the world premiere of Edward
Naylor's opera The Angelus. In
1911, she sang Suzuki in Madame
Butterfly there alongside Emmy Destinn and continued to perform in
several smaller roles at the house.
From 1915 to 1920, she was engaged by the Beecham Opera Company. In
addition to Suzuki, her notable roles included the Mother in Charpentier's Louise and Maddalena in Rigoletto. In 1917, she appeared in
the English premiere of Bizet's opera La
jolie fille de Perth in Manchester under Sir Thomas Beecham. She also
participated in an opera tour of Australia and toured Canada with the Quinlan
Opera Company.
From 1922 to 1923, she was a member of the British National Opera
Company in London, where she again performed the Mother in Louise and appeared in Offenbach
operettas. She also enjoyed a distinguished career in England as a concert
alto, particularly in oratorio and lieder.
In 1912, she married the renowned bass-baritone Norman Allin (1884–1973).
Recordings: She made rare acoustic recordings for HMV,
including the quartet from Rigoletto
with Rosina Buckman, Maurice D'Oisly, and Frederick Austin. In 1982, a Schubert
Lied was transcribed to LP.
