ROBERT FRANZ BÜSSEL (NUREMBERG, 25 JULY, 1880 - DRESDEN, 28 DECEMBER, 1953)

He studied singing with K. Becker in Cologne. From 1896 to 1898, he worked as a chorister at the Cologne Opera House, then sang as a soloist at the Zentraltheater in Berlin from 1898 to 1899, at the Stadttheater in Essen from 1899 to 1902, and at the Leipzig Opera House from 1904 to 1906.

His real career, however, began in 1906 at the Court Opera (later the State Opera) in Dresden, where he remained for almost 40 years (until 1944). As one of the ensemble's most reliable pillars, he performed major and minor roles as required, specializing particularly in buffo parts. His repertoire is said to have included over 600 different operatic roles. His most important parts were Papageno in The Magic Flute and Masetto in Don Giovanni.

He played a small role in the memorable premiere of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier on January 26, 1911, in Dresden. He also appeared in other Strauss premieres in Dresden, including Intermezzo (November 4, 1924) and Arabella (July 1, 1933). He participated as well in the Dresden premiere of Busoni’s Doktor Faust (May 21, 1925).

Other opera premieres in which he took part during his long Dresden career included Die toten Augen by Eugen d’Albert (March 5, 1916), Der Günstling by Rudolf Wagner-Régeny (February 20, 1935), Die Zauberinsel by Heinrich Sutermeister (October 31, 1942), and the opera Coeur As by Eduard Künnecke (1913).

In 1936, he performed with the ensemble of the Dresden State Opera in London, appearing in The Marriage of Figaro, Ariadne auf Naxos, Der Rosenkavalier, and Tristan und Isolde.

His artistry was also highly regarded as a concert and lieder singer. He recorded for Polyphon (opera arias), as well as Parlophon, Pathé, and Vox, though these are almost exclusively lieder and ballads. He also left recordings as a member of a male quartet in which Erik Enderlein, among others, sang.
