MATHILDE DENNERY (1876 - 1923)

 

 

 

The artist began her career in 1900 at the Kaiserslautern City Theater, then spent a season at the Kassel Court Theater, and from 1903 to 1904 at the Magdeburg City Theater. From there, she moved to the Cologne Opera House, where she was engaged from 1904 to 1907. She remained based in Cologne thereafter, never accepting a permanent engagement but pursuing extensive guest performances until the mid-1920s.

She frequently appeared at the Leipzig Opera House (1902–1908), at the Stuttgart Court Theatre in 1902 and 1903, the Theater des Westens in Berlin in 1903, the Hanover Court Theatre in 1903 and 1906, the Braunschweig Court Theatre in 1903 and 1908, the Mannheim Court Theatre in 1907, and the Graz City Theatre, the Weimar Court Theatre, and the Breslau Opera House in 1908. She also sang at the Berlin Gura Opera in 1908 and 1909, the Wiesbaden Court Theatre from 1909 to 1911, the Karlsruhe Court Theatre from 1910 to 1913, the Frankfurt Opera House and the Bremen City Theatre in 1911, the Hamburg Volksoper during the 1914–15 season, the Basel City Theatre in 1917, and the Düsseldorf Opera House in 1923.

Her repertoire focused on roles from the German opera literature, including Pamina in The Magic Flute, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Senta in The Flying Dutchman, Irene in Wagner’s Rienzi, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Elsa in Lohengrin, Eva in Die Meistersinger, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Gutrune in Götterdämmerung, Anna in Marschner’s Hans Heiling, and Martha in d'Albert’s Tiefland.

She also performed roles from Italian and French opera, such as Leonora in Il trovatore, Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello, Bertha in Meyerbeer’s Le prophète, Valentine in Les Huguenots, Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann, and Micaëla in Carmen.

She made recordings for G&T in Cologne (1905–07, solo and duets with Tilman Liszewsky), Zonophone in Cologne (1905–06, also duets with Tilman Liszewsky), and Pathé in Berlin (1909, solo arias).
