VIOLETTA DE STROZZI (SARAJEVO,
APRIL 8, 1896 – NEW YORK, MARCH 23, 1981)
Her real name was Ljubica Oblak-Strozzi. She studied at the Zagreb
Conservatory (Agram) under the renowned Milka Ternina, among others, and later
with Irene Schlemmer-Ambros in Vienna. She made her debut at the Zagreb Opera
in 1916 as Maid Anne in Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor. She remained at
that theater until 1922, then sang at the Breslau Opera House from 1922 to
1924, and was engaged at the Berlin State Opera from 1924 to 1933. There, she
performed a diverse repertoire, including roles such as Aida, Tosca, Leonore in
Il trovatore and La forza del destino, Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, Martha
in d'Albert's Tiefland, the title roles in Richard Strauss's Salome and Ariadne
auf Naxos, Jenůfa in Janáček's opera, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, and Irene in
Wagner's Rienzi (Berlin, 1932). In 1927, she appeared as a guest at both the
Vienna State Opera and the Dresden State Opera, and in 1928 at the Berlin Kroll
Opera. She also made guest appearances in Paris, Prague, and Rome. In 1933, she
emigrated to North America, where she joined the Cosmopolitan Opera from 1934
to 1935, performing as a guest at the New York Hippodrome.

recordings on Odeon and HMV.
