WALTER WHEATLEY (12 JAN 1878 WEBB CITY, JASPER COUNTY, MISSOURI – 27 SEP 1934 CORVALLIS, BENTON COUNTY, OREGON)
He studied singing with Agramonte in New York, La Pierre in Paris, Messina, Anselmi and Colti in Milan and made his debut at Covent Garden, London as Turiddu in “Cavalleria Rusticana” under the direction of Cleofonte Campanini. Here he appeared with success four seasons. In December 1906 he gave a concert in Cologne, which was reported on by the well-known American bass-baritone Clarence Whitehill. Prior to World War I, he sang in Italy, France and Germany, though most of his time was spent in the British Isles. When the war led him to cancel his British contracts, he appeared under the auspices of the Metropolitan Opera in a series of operas in English in New York City. After the war’s conclusion, he made a successful tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1919 and 1920. He was acclaimed for his repertoire of over 40 operas and his ability to sing in Italian, French or English. His vocal strength was such he could sing both lyric and dramatic roles.
