WŁADYSŁAW KIEPURA (SOSNOWIEC, POLAND, 1904 – FORT LAUDERDALE, USA, 1998)
He was the younger brother of Jan Kiepura. He studied singing under Tadeusz Leliwa and made his debut in 1932 at the Kraków Opera in the title role of Gounod’s Faust. He achieved great success performing at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, Lwów, Poznań, Berlin, Dresden, Budapest, and Riga. In 1935, he sang the leading role in S. Moniuszko’s opera Halka at its premiere in Hamburg. In 1934, he appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
On January 29, 1939, he made his debut at La Scala, performing the role of Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème. He sang in several languages, including Polish, Russian, German, French, Italian, and English. In 1940, he emigrated to America, where he started a family and resided until his death. He appeared at the Chicago Civic Opera in 1940, 1941, and 1953.
