KAROLINA PIETRASZEWSKA (CAROLINA PIETRACEWSKA) (WARSAW, POLAND, 1870 – WARSAW, POLAND, 1940)

She studied piano with A. Michałowski and singing with H. Dziekońska, continuing her vocal studies with Nuvelli at the Institute of Music in Warsaw, graduating in 1900. Already during her studies, she performed publicly.

Her operatic debut came in 1906 at the Warsaw Opera, where she sang the soprano role of Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre. She later shifted to mezzo-soprano roles, including Fricka in Die Walküre, Amneris in Aida, Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera by Verdi, Larina in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and Cześnikowa in Moniuszko’s The Haunted Manor.

In the 1907-1908 season, she was engaged by La Scala in Milan, performing in Wagner’s Das Rheingold (one of the Rhine’s daughters) and Götterdämmerung (Waltraute), and singing the role of the Mother in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda. She also guest-performed at the opera houses of Turin and Odessa in 1909-1910.

She returned to Warsaw in 1911, focusing on teaching and concert performances. She appeared at various venues, including the 100th anniversary celebration of Wagner’s birth (1913), and performed in concert versions of Wagner’s works at the Warsaw Philharmonic (e.g., Tristan und Isolde and Siegfried). She also performed in Kraków, Vilnius, Lviv, and Italy.

During World War I, she lived in Moscow. After the war, she moved to Poznań, where she founded the I. Paderewski Music School, laying the foundation for what would become the later conservatory. From 1920, she was active in Warsaw, running her own vocal studio and teaching at the Reduta Theatre, the Higher School of Theatre, and managing her vocal ensemble with L. Schiller at the Theatre W. Bogusławski (from 1924).

She also collaborated with B. Rutkowski to establish the Association of Early Music Enthusiasts (1926-1939).
