SOFÍA DEL CAMPO Y DE LA FUENTE (SANTIAGO, CHILE, 16 OCTOBER, 1884 – SANTIAGO, CHILE, 24 JUNE, 1964)
She came from an aristocratic family; her grandfather was the Marqués de la Peña Blanca. She initially received her vocal training at the Conservatory in Santiago de Chile, where her remarkable talent attracted attention. The Chilean government proposed sending her to Germany for further studies, but her parents strongly opposed this plan. As a result, she limited her early artistic endeavors to charity concerts.
When the Bracale Opera Company toured Chile in the early 1920s and needed a coloratura soprano, she stepped in, performing Lucia di Lammermoor with great success. As the tour continued, she sang roles such as Gilda in Rigoletto, Ophélie in Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas, Violetta in La Traviata, and Rosina in The Barber of Seville. These performances led to a concert tour across Chile.
In 1924, she gave a recital at the Teatro Odeón in Buenos Aires. Following this, she traveled to Rome to further her musical studies and performed concerts in both Rome and Paris in 1926. Her North American concert debut took place in New York in 1927, followed by performances in other U.S. cities.
Despite her early operatic success, she appears to have retired from the opera stage, focusing instead on concerts in South America. In these later years, she was known more as a socialite than as a professional singer. She was the mother of Rosita Serrano (b. 1914), a renowned film and entertainment singer.
