HERBERT ERNST GROH (LUCERNE, 27 MAY, 1905 – NORDERSTEDT, NEAR HAMBURG, 28 JULY, 1982)
His father was German, and his mother was Swiss. He gave his first concert at the age of 13 in Basel. After studying in Zurich and Milan, he made his debut in 1926 at the Darmstadt State Theater, where he remained until 1928. This was followed by an extensive concert and guest tour throughout Italy, where he gained attention for his performances in operettas.
Upon returning to Germany, he briefly engaged with the municipal theater in Mönchengladbach-Rheydt (1930) before focusing primarily on radio and recordings. In 1930, he was appointed as the first soloist for the Hamburg radio station. From 1935 onwards, he became a sought-after guest at various German radio stations, while also continuing to perform in concerts. Between 1933 and 1936, he frequently appeared in operetta concerts at the Admiralspalast in Berlin.
He achieved significant success as a recording artist, especially with his interpretations of operetta melodies. In 1946, he embarked on a major European tour alongside the celebrated operetta composer Robert Stolz.
In 1955, he married the soprano Friedel Blasius, his third wife. Together, they toured the United States in 1968, where they received great acclaim for their performances in the musical My Fair Lady. His career spanned several decades, and he remained active for much of his life.
He spent his later years on his country estate in Holstein. His tenor voice was characterized by lyrical expressiveness and radiant brilliance in the upper registers.
An operetta recording by the singer, using the name Ernesto Groh, was released in Italy on HMV in 1933. His partner on these recordings was the soprano Pia Rossi, a pseudonym for Pia Tassinari.
