Roxy King (Soprano) (Alliance, Ohio, USA 1878 - Brazil, Rio de Janeiro ?)

Santuzza

When she was 13 year old, her family went to Brazil. At the age of 16, she appeared in Rio de Janeiro in Alberto Nepomuceno’s opera ‘’Artemis’’. She sang so successfully, that she was sent to the additional education to Europe, where she studied singing under Selma Nicklass-Kempner at the Berlin Conservatory. In 1901 she made her debut at the Theater des Westens in Berlin as Milada in B. Smetana’s opera ‘’Dalibor’’. In 1902 she was engaged by the Hofoper in Berlin, where she substituted for the famous Lilli Lehmann as Donna Anna in ‘’Don Giovanni’’. She had their great success as Selika in G. Meyerbeer’s ‘’Africaine’’, this role she sang in one single season 60 times at the Hofoper. She appeared at the Hofoper in Berlin like at the Theater des Westens in Berlin as a partner of so famous singers like Enrico Caruso and Francisco d'Andrade. She also added some roles to her stage repertoire from operas of R. Wagner: Senta in "Fliegenden Holländer", Venus in ‘’Tannhäuser’’ and Elsa in ‘’Lohengrin’’. In 1908 she visited her family in Brazil. There she married and retired from the stage. She worked later in Brazil as pedagogue.
