FRITZ
SCHRÖDTER (LEIPZIG, 15 MARCH, 1855 – VIENNA, 15 JANUARY, 1924)
He first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and began
his career as an operetta singer at smaller operetta societies in Cologne,
Hamburg, and Bremen. During a guest appearance at the
Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtischen Theater in Berlin, he caught the attention of Johann
Strauss, who arranged for his engagement at the National Theatre of Budapest in
1876.
In 1877, he became an operetta tenor at the Ring-Theater in Vienna and
later studied under Kapellmeister Stoltz in Prague. His debut as an opera
singer occurred in 1879 at the German Theatre in Prague, where he remained
until 1886. During this time, he performed notable roles, including Don Ottavio
in Don Giovanni, the Duke in Rigoletto, Enzo in Ponchielli's La Gioconda, and David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
In 1884, he made a guest appearance at Covent Garden in London under
Hans Richter. He was engaged by the Vienna Court Opera in 1886, where he
excelled as both a buffo tenor and in lyric tenor roles. He participated in
three opera premieres by Karl Goldmark: Merlin
(November 19, 1886), Das Heimchen am
Herd (March 21, 1896), and Ein
Wintermärchen (January 2, 1900). He also sang in the premiere of Eugene
d'Albert's Die verschenkte Frau
(February 6, 1912) and Weber's Die
drei Pintos (1889).
In Vienna, he portrayed roles such as Tonio in Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, the title roles
in Auber's Fra Diavolo and
Flotow's Alessandro Stradella,
Canio in Pagliacci, Assad in
Goldmark’s Königin von Saba,
and Peter Ivanov in Lortzing's Zar und
Zimmermann. He remained a member of the Vienna Opera until 1915.
He made guest appearances at various venues, including the German
Theatre in Prague (1884), the Opera House of Brünn (1890), the Court Opera in
Munich as David in Meistersinger
(1901), and the Opera House in Cologne as an Iron Stone in Die Fledermaus (1911). During the
1898-1900 seasons, he performed at the Wiesbaden festival.
On January 15, 1916, he sang at the Vienna Raimund Theatre in the
premiere of the operetta Das
Dreimäderlhaus by H. Berté. He was also a highly respected concert
singer and performed in the premiere of Gustav Mahler's Das klagende Lied in Vienna (February 17, 1901). After retiring,
he worked as a pedagogue in Vienna and was the father-in-law of bass Wilhelm
Hesch (1860-1908).
