BERNHARD BÖTEL (HAMBURG, 9 JULY, 1883 – BERLIN, 1953)

His father was the renowned tenor Heinrich Bötel (1854-1938). He studied singing with Mathieu Lorent in Hamburg and later under Ernst Grenzebach in Berlin. He made his debut in 1905 at the Municipal Theatre of Aachen as Lancelot in the operetta La Poupée by Audran. He then joined the Komische Oper, where he achieved significant success as Hoffmann in Hoffmanns Erzählungen. During his four years in Berlin, he also performed various Buffo roles.

In 1907, he appeared with the ensemble of the Komische Oper at the Adelphi Theatre in London for the English premiere of Hoffmanns Erzählungen as a comprimario. He later enjoyed a notable career as an operetta singer in Vienna, first at the Vienna Opera House and then from 1912 to 1914 at the Raimund Theatre. On November 17, 1909, he participated in the premiere of F. Lehár's operetta Der Graf von Luxemburg at the Vienna Opera House.

In the 1914-1915 season, he was active at the Municipal Theatre of Halle/Saale. He returned to Berlin, where, throughout the 1920s, he became a respected member of the Berlin Urban Opera as a Tenor-Buffo. During this time, he also appeared as an operetta singer and gained acclaim as a partner of the famous diva Fritzi Massary. In the 1928-1931 seasons, he performed at the Berlin Kroll Opera. He retired from the stage in 1935.
