PAUL RAZAVET (AURAY, MORBIHAN, 27 JULY, 1882 – ? 1957)
He began his opera career in 1911 at the opera house in Verviers,
Belgium. He performed at various opera houses including Nice, Nantes,
Montpellier, and Vichy before being drafted into military service in 1914. He
served throughout World War I as a soldier with the 1st French Infantry
Division.
After the war, he was engaged by the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels
in 1918, where he remained until 1925. During his tenure there, he established
himself as an excellent lyrical tenor. In 1925, he appeared at the Opéra
National de Bordeaux and later made his debut at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as
Werther.
In 1923, he performed at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in the
French-speaking premiere of Ruggiero Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini. His
elegant stage presence earned him a special place in the hearts of Belgian
opera audiences.
He retired from the stage in 1932 and subsequently taught singing in
Paris.
