Angelo Scandiani (Baritone) (Venezia 1872 – Milan 1930)

At first he was an employee in the civil service. Around 1900 he began his singing career in smaller Italian stages. In 1903 he sang the role of Amfortas in a concert performance of the ‘’Parsifal’’ at La Scala (probably only 3-rd act). On 30. 11. 1904 he appeared at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, Turin in the premiere of Alfano’s ‘’Risurrezione’’. In the first decade of the 20th century Scandiani made guest appearances at Covent Garden, London where from 1906-08 performed in ‘’Carmen’’, ‘’Faust’’, in different Verdi's operas, as a partner of Emmy Destinn in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. In 1911 he was a member of the Nellie Melba’s opera troupe, which made appearances in Australia. In 1916 he sang at La Scala the role of Lothario in ‘’Mignon’’ together with Ninon Vallin. The same year he guested at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as Hans Sachs in the ‘’Meistersingers’’. He was also known as an interpreter of the part of the Mefistofele in ‘’La damnation de Faust’’ written by Berlioz. From 1919-30 he was active in the administrative apparatus of  La Scala.

Victor Maurel (Baritone) (Marseilles 1848 - New York City 1923)

                                                                  Jago

He was a French operatic baritone who enjoyed an international reputation as a great singing-actor. Educated in music and stage craft at the Paris Conservatory, he made his debut in opera at the city of his birth, Marseilles, in 1867. The following year, he performed on stage in Paris for the first time. The city of New York first heard him in 1873, when he performed at the Academy of Music. Later, he would sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House (in 1894-96 and 1898–99). Other famous venues at which he appeared included London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden—in 1873-79, 1891–95 and 1904—and the Paris Opera, where he was on the roster of singers from 1879 through to 1894. Maurel was renowned in Europe and the United States for his vivid stage presence and exceptional acting and make-up skills; but his voice, while well trained and of good quality, was not considered to be as impressive as that of his chief French baritone rivals, Jean Lassalle (1847–1909) and Maurice Renaud (1861–1933). In 1887, Maurel created the role of Iago in Otello at La Scala, Milan, and then, in 1893, he created the title role in Falstaff, again at La Scala. These were the final two operatic masterpieces composed by Giuseppe Verdi, and it was Verdi who selected Maurel to perform in the premieres. Maurel made operatic history for a third time in 1892 when he was chosen to be the first Tonio in Ruggero Leoncavallo's enduringly popular verismo opera, Pagliacci. Like many Paris-trained singers of his day, Maurel was equally adept at performing roles in Italian and French. He appeared, too, in several German operas by Richard Wagner and was a famous Don Giovanni in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera of the same name. After retiring from opera, Maurel taught singing in New York City, where he died at the age of 75. One of his pupils was contralto Frances Ingram.

Alessandro Bonci (Tenor) (Cesena 1870 – Viserba, Rimini 1940)

He was an Italian lyric tenor known internationally for his association with the bel canto repertoire. He sang at many famous theatres, including New York's Metropolitan Opera, Milan's La Scala and London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. A native of Cesena, Romagna, Bonci started out as an apprentice shoemaker. He secured a music scholarship to the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro, working for five years with Carlo Pedrotti (the teacher of the heroic tenor Francesco Tamagno) and then Felice Coen. He also had private singing lessons in Paris with the retired baritone Enrico Delle Sedie. Alessandro Bonci made his debut in Parma in 1896, singing the role of Fenton in Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff at the Teatro Regio. Before the end of his first season he was engaged to sing at La Scala, Milan, where he debuted in Vincenzo Bellini's I Puritani. Appearances elsewhere in Europe followed, including at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He first sang at Covent Garden in 1900 and he would return there in 1903 and 1907-08. On December 3, 1906, Bonci made his American debut with the Manhattan Opera Company in New York City; again the opera was I Puritani. He stayed two seasons with the company, becoming a popular competitor to Enrico Caruso, who was the rival Metropolitan Opera's major drawcard. Bonci himself joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1908 and, in 1914, the Chicago Opera. He also made a transcontinental tour of America in 1910-11, giving song recitals. Bonci served in the Italian army during World War I, returning to America to tour for three seasons after the end of the conflict. He appeared again at the Metropolitan Opera, and sang in Chicago during the 1920-21 season. In 1922 and 1923 he served as the principal tenor of the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and conducted master classes across the United States the following year. After 1925, Bonci entered into partial retirement, devoting himself primarily to teaching in Milan. He still sang occasionally in public as late as 1935. He died in Viserba, Rimini, in 1940, at the age of 70.
